A friend of mine threatens to kill herself every so often for attention. Her favorite move is to empty pill bottles, feigning that she swallowed them all; I sometimes find the dissolved pills in the toilet or in the trash.
I'm worried that one day she won't get the reaction out of me that she wants and will actually go through with it. Anyone ever dealt with this?
She needs to learn how to talk about the things that are bothering her and stop scaring her friends with bullshit. Good job sticking around. I would have wiped my hands of it after the first time.

We actually do talk about it. It has to do with a guy she has been with for a very long time. She does this whenever they are getting ready to split up in order to keep him around.

Call her out on it. Say you know she is just doing it for attention and that it's unhealthy and manipulative.
If she comes back with "I'm serious this time" or something then literally dial 911 and give her info out, saying she is threatening to hurt and kill herself. One of two things will happen. She will get help she needs at the hospital or she'll get stuck in suicide watch and an ambulance bill and hate every moment of it. If it's the former great, support her on getting treatment. If it's the latter (which is sounds like it would be) then she'll be more reluctant to do it again, or at least not bother you with it.

A 51/50 would destroy her life, she'd lose her security clearance and would never be able to work again, would lose her house and she'd probably seriously want to kill herself at that point.
This is the only reason why I haven't done that, it is a really tricky situation.

Exactly what I came in here to say! It's extremely manipulative and I couldn't emotionally handle the anxiousness and pain of having a friend consistently threaten to kill themselves. Definitely call 911 next time, both of the situations mentioned are the best outcome. Had a boyfriend who'd pull the same shit, he'd send pictures of him cutting himself when I broke up with him. The second I said I was calling his parents and an ambulance, he stopped, it was just a manipulative cry for attention/forcing me to be with him, sounds like this girl is the same
