Has anyone ever had surgery for TMD?

I have moderate TMD pain with the included grinding issues and facial asymmetry. It started about 3 years ago but only within the past6 months became an issue. I talked to a chiro about it and while we worked on it, he said surgery would pretty much be the only option.

It's a $5000+ procedure that won't be covered by my insurance. I was considering just saving up the money and going for it, but I wanted to know if anyone else has had experience with it.

It would be great to get rid of the pain and would have the added benefit of better facial symmetry but I've read mixed reviews

I'm getting it next year but I have braces right now so Id on't have much to offer besides the fact that you will prbably have to pay for orthodontics too which your insurance is even less likely to cover.

The surgery itself is called orthognathic in my case, which I think is actually a broader term for most types of jaw surgery.

ah bogus
I've already worn braces, my teeth are fine, it's a jaw structure issue so I'm not sure orthodontics would do anything which is why my chiro wanted to refer me to a tmj specialist. I REALLY don't want to wear orthodontics again, fuck me. I think the surgery I'd be doing is maxillofacial

i'm wondering if I can just hop over to the UK and get it done cheaper

It sucks dude, but if your teeth got misaligned at all since you last had braces they will make you get them again. I was really against it at first but my parents offered to pay a good amount of it so I did it anyway.

I think for a lot of people they can't just do the surgery, if they are working anywhere around your teeth they have to prep your teeth for it with braces and then stabilize them after the surgery with them too.

For me it's a year with them, then the surgery, then another year of braces and like 25k in expenses, it's ridiculous.

do you know if there is an option for orthodontics that don't involve traditional braces?
I don't want those ugly fuckers stuck in my mouth again.

Invisalign if you're able with a certain facial structure.

Also there's clear braces which are less noticeable now but it's still braces.

thanks! I guess it's time to visit an orthodontist

you can get bracers that go on the backside of your teeth. they're called lingual orthodontics and are basically invisible, but cost more. I plan to get them soon.

I've had it and now i can't feel my lower lip and a part of my chin. The fucking surgeon said there was a small risk and it happened.

that's pretty neat. I don't mind paying a little more in order to not look like a huge dweeb all over again

jesus fuck what a nightmare, details?

The surgeon can cut one of your nerves while doing it. This is what happened.
However when i talked about it, nobody would believe me, they'd tell me to wait until everything goes back to normal.
Everything did except for that area.

yeah, I'm over 30 so no way I'm getting regular braces. they cost significantly more, though. like 2-3 times as much, I've been told.

I'm not him but I've been warned about it too.

There's a nerve running along the bottom of your gums going across your mouth. The surgery cuts into that area and if they expose it too much or something then you can lose feeling there, the same way old people do and then end up not realizing they are drooling.

The higher up the nerve is, the higher the risk. Mine is pretty low so they told me it was a lower chance. They also said it's an operational effectiveness thing: the longer the surgeon's been doing it the lower the risk of complications.

I guess I'll sit on it for a little longer. does the nerve go up to the tmj? I imagine so but i'm clueless
