Is in normal for a friend of an opposite sex to constantly be in touch with you via social media through the day (like 12 hours on and off contact through the day, every day)?
I don't considerate normal for a person to even use social media that much, let alone to maintain contact with a single person using it.
Depends on the friendship legnth.

It's mostly contact via messenger

It's still an obsessive amount of time spent on social matters. If your friend smoked as often as they used social media, they would already have one of those voicebox speaker thingies.

Met in some sort of schooling/work/social club?
That sounds only a tad obsessive if yes.
I would lean more towards the 12 hours on social media being a concern.

We met at one on the courses. Thing is that we can't see each other in real life (I moved states temporarily)
I know being that much on social media isn't good, but it's not the main concern there. I was just wondering if it's typical to text, or message so much if you are just friends.

If they're like best buds and hang out possibly everyday then no it's not strange. You should fear a long distance relationship though, as those usually don't work.
