So I was getting ready to transfer colleges, and when I talked to my parents about cosigning a loan they basically laughed at me and said I didn't deserve to go to college. What do I do now? I'm getting older, I need some sort of career and I had all my heart and mind focused on completing school. What should I try to do? Find money for school? Even though my credit is fucked up. And why is it so hard getting into a trade?

First thing, you should try to figure out why your credit is shit and fix it. I say that because that will take the longest, but be the most beneficial to you in the long run. Best website to use for credit score related stuff: https://www.creditkarma.com
(100% free)

Secondly, do the school you are going to have any sort of financial assistance at all? Are you able to find scholarships or grants?

What trade are you trying to get into? How much more schooling do you have left or did you even start?

Credit is shit because I owe the bank a $400, one payday loan place about $400, and the hospital about $45, no bully plz I know I'm dumb

I'm looking for scholarships and grants but I've missed the deadline for a lot.

Plumbing or HVAC, maybe electrical or carpentry? Anything that puts me to work and lets me grow up and not be a manchild. I have about 3 years of school left, 2 if I bust my ass and take every CLEP test I can.

No judgements here, don't worry.
Okay, so only $845? That's not that bad, have you checked your credit score to see the actual number? How hard would it be to start paying off some those debts?

Well that being said, there are still alternatives. Have you been able to find any recent ones that you can fill out? How much is a semester's tuition at the school?

I know this may sound stupid, but are those things that you actually want to do or are just doing for the sake of money?

Do you have a job right now? What's your current situation?

My credit score is 501. It wouldn't be too hard, I just work a shitty part time job and don't make that much money.

I filled out one for a school I got accepted to. I flat out asked for all the money it would take to go there. A semester's tuition is $3.8k.

I'll do them if need be. I really wanted to go to college, I hadn't set my mind on anything else, but I'll do anything to move out and start my life.

Like I said before, shitty part time job. No car, live with family

Okay, so you'll definitely need a cosigner for a loan with that kind of score.

I'm assuming they denied you when you asked for the money? If your parents make enough money then they're going to definitely not give you any financial aid, especially since they take into account their financial status (whether you claim independent or not).

3.8k is definitely not the worst thing in the world, but I don't know if you have enough time to get into this semester.

The reason I asked about how much you liked those careers is because they do require a "next step" so to speak like apprenticeship. Unless your heart is in it, I would rethink your career goals.

How old are you? Also what part time job do you have?

What kind of job is it?
>>

Yeah, they denied me. And yeah, my parents make a good amount of money and I don't qualify for independent status.

I probably don't.

I mean, I could live with being a plumber or HVAC guy. They make good money.

I'm 22, work at a grocery store

Listen man, you're only 22, you sound just like where I was at that age.

I say skip the semester and see if you can convert that part-time to full-time (I know it can be hard, I've worked at a grocery store before). That way you can pay down the debt you have and save a bit for school. Then you could also apply for more scholarships and do what you can.

But here is where you can be better than most people in your spot. You want to do HVAC? Read up on HVAC stuff. Find online resources teaching HVAC fundamentals and keep learning. After that you can talk to HVAC people and see if they might be willing to show you the ropes, give you an internship or even let you work a little for free just to gain some experience.

A quick Google search shows that you could outright do an apprenticeship and get paid while learning (probably more than grocery). I would say that would be even better than trade school. If you combine self-teaching with an apprenticeship you'll fly through.

I guess that's what I need to do. I guess I'm stuck for the time being.

I keep searching for apprenticeships in my area on Indeed, and calling companies, but none of them are looking for apprentices right now. So maybe all I can do right now is read up and learn so I'm not a complete know-nothing. It blows but what can I do.
>>
Should I consider saving up and moving if I can't find opportunities here? I guess I need a car first, but still.
>>
>>17362757
Trust me, it could be worse on the streets, at least you can hold out for now.

>>17362996
It depends on how much you would be able to afford living expenses on an apprentice wage. However, a car could be a good bet for you. How far have you looked in your area for apprenticeships?
>>
>>17363012
I've been looking really on and off for a few years, but over the last week I've called into a few places and been searching extensively on Indeed and Craigslist.

bump to see if anyone else has successfully navigated this situation
