Here's a playlist of tutorials from the previous cinematic director of the Mass Effect series.
They're mostly particles/lighting, but there's a few in there that are just general tips.

SFMLab obviously has basically every nude model that animators use, but thought I'd mention it just in case you aren't aware.

That's about all you need to get started.
The rest is just animation knowledge, which is about practicing, not watching tutorials.

Here's another animation, for the anon that requested some Catwoman vs Femshep (>>559460
>>559460). I couldn't really see how they could ride a double dildo and hug, so I changed it a bit. I also tried to mess around with some other things.

It still doesn't looks completely right, I think I have to use multiple loops with smaller loops in them to get a more natural feel. I guess I go for some fast animations next to see how that works out.

Any tips or critique are welcome!

There's a bit of trial and error behind finding the right timing between keyframes when you're animating.
Too little time between each, and it looks spastic and too fast.
Too much time and it looks a bit too slow. I think your problem is the latter.
Keep at it though! It's cool to see someone's progress in these threads.


On an unrelated note, here's some un-watermarked OC for the thread. Sorry that it's not the usual Mass Effect or Overwatch stuff. If you aren't a fan of this style of models I apologize in advance.
I'm also new to SFM. Need to re-learn how to animate because it's been a while.

Tips for volumetrics in loops:

1. Turn NoiseStrength to zero.

2. Throw away the first few frames of a render. SFM starts renders with default intensity, which changes to the intensity defined in the animation set editor (yes, SFM is shit). You need to render extra frames before the beginning of the loop and cut them out using an editor or ffmpeg. There are various ways of doing this, but I create 3 copies of the loop running consecutively (which also makes it easier to get smooth curves) and render from 10 frames before the beginning of the second loop to its end, then cut out the extra ten frames with ffmpeg. This also helps with flexes as they can behave in a similar stupid way.

3. If you still have problems try repositioning the light. Volumetrics can have 3D structure which can change over the loop due to approximations being used in computation. Also, repositioning may allow you to use default intensity.

4. If you're desperate, try experimenting with constant attenuation and radius to flatten out the lighting to a fog effect, and rely on non-volumetrics for shadows and sculptural lighting.

5. Don't use volumetrics. Rely on focus to get depth.

To see the effect of focus, you need to choose the scene camera and go to Clip Editor, or do a render. The same also applies for motion blur, lighting radius and ambient occlusion, none of which are accurately represented in Motion/Graph Editor.

Okay I'm doing some animation tests, quick and dirty just to figure out how to make videos from renders. I rarely ever use my 3D software for rendering anything more than just reference images for 2D illustration.

I render the images at 1920x1080 but for some reason when I put the renders together in my video software (Premier Elements 8) it renders the video with the frames shrunken inside a 1920x1080 frame with a black border all around the frame.

Any idea why it's doing this? I've only ever used this software for mixing video and when I mix video it never does this, it only does it when I try to make videos from still images.

Also while I'm at it, the Webm compression seems to add an awful lot of artifacts to the render. Is there anything I should be looking at doing to minimize the artifacts while still maintaining a decent file size?

What software would be best? I'm using Xmedia Recode but it crashes as soon as I attempt to make any adjustments to the video and there are no Webm plugins available for the version of Premier I bought many many years ago.

I absolutely hate Lord Aardvark. His animations are terrible, his models are horribly rigged, and his head is up his own ass. That said, he his last samus model has some of the best jigglebones I've seen in an sfm model, I just don't know if it was his own doing or a port of someone elses work.

The solution was if you don't set the frame aspect at the start of a project it can't be changed once the project has begun thus even if you render at the higher resolution Adobe resizes your content as if it was rendering at whatever aspect ration your started the project.

I think one major problem is that SFM Porn came up while Patreon was big.
No one is interested in teaching other people how to improve because why would you want people looking at other people's animations. Instead everyone is focused on their own tumblrs.

In general though, 3d animation tutorials online are sparse and usually focused on something very specific.

I'll try to give my two cents on some of these though. I won't guarantee accuracy on these, it's just what I've found.

I'm going to use your webm as an example. First it essentially has only 2 frames to it. 1) Pre Thrust and 2) Post Thrust. This makes it seem very robotic as it is straight up just a piston motion. What I've found beneficial is to form a relatively circular motion path. When you are working on keyframing you will see the green pathline it shows you what path the part of the body will move and how long it will take to move through that path.

Another thing is that when Sherry is being pushed into, she is moving uniformly as one solid mass. Imagine on your desk you have 4 pop cans lined up with a bit of space between each one. When you push the first can they won't all move in unison. Some will rotate and some will take time to be affected by the push. In your webm the first thing to be affected would be the pelvis being pushed forward. You could then take a look and see that since she is being held partially by her chest, her chest has a force pushing it back. So Instead of having the chest move straight forward along with the pelvis, the chest might rotate back since it has a force pushing against it.

Also select all keyframes and click on spline tangents. That will chance the interpolation between frames to have more of an ease in ease out effect.

To do this you need to know what some VMT commands are. Things like $phong $phongexponent $phongboost $color and $alpha are probably ones I use the most.

$phong (bool)(int) should probably always have a value of true/1
$phongexponent (int) controls how sharp the specular shine on a model is, Higher values being sharper than lower values. Goes from 0-255
$phongbboost (float) being a multiplier of how strong the shine on the model is.

With those three you can make an otherwise dry looking character look like they have been out in a rainstorm, or look sweaty.

$alpha (float) is simple, 1 is opaque 0 is fully invisible. If there is a part of the model that you don't want and it has one material for that part you can hide it with this.

$color (color)(vector3) This one is really interesting. Say that you want to change a models hair from blonde to red. Add $color with a color variable and you can quickly shift the color to find the right hue. You will quickly notice that with a color variable you will be able to darken/add color, but you won't be able to brighten it. That's where the Vector3 variable comes in. It takes a lot more number plugging but you can adjust the colors of the material to be brighter/more vibrant. This does have a side effect though, set the values too high and the color becomes emissive (glows), which can be useful for some circumstances.

All of this relies heavily on the currently existing VMT file though, some will work while other materials won't even show up under the material override hierarchy. Save often as well, material overrides are fickle.

If it doesn't attach then either the rig script has an error in it or it was never meant for the model you are trying to attach it to. Most biped models now adays use either simple, valve3spine, or the skyrim_pure ik rig.

The Sherry webm isn't my work. I was just bemoaning the fact that there is no single text reference for tips and tricks for SFM beginners. For example, if a rig doesn't attach, try renaming the model animation set and try to attach again. This was a common problem with the maleshep model. I don't know why this happens, but it would be nice if there were a place that recorded arbitrary facts like this.

It's all very well giving a bit of advice in these threads, but it will be seen by very few people and will be gone in a few days. Video tutorials are fine, but a searchable text reference would save a lot of time for bemused beginners facing the weird shit that SFM throws at you.

I don't know anything about modeling, but my understanding is that Aardvark's models are based on the Daz3D Genesis body, with custom genitalia and heads ripped from games.

There's Rule34Hentai with the Source_Filmmaker tag, and the owner is pretty good about putting up all the worthwhile stuff people make, but the site itself is complete garbage. Expect long loading times compared to most other sites and for the site itself to go down if more than 2 people are on it at the same time.

SFM only uses ripped game models which mean all the rigging problems inherent in a general weight painted figure are going to be part of your animation. Since you can't create JCMs to take care of the rigging problems there are going to be problems that show up in the hips and shoulders.

Most game models use A-Pose models these days which is fine since characters rarely raise their arms high in games. But if you're making an animation with the legs wide spread and the arms raised high then you're going to be pushing the rig in ways it wasn't designed for because they were never going to be posed that way in the game.

This is why if if you want your models to bend nicely you should geograph the head to a Daz Genesis figure and then use Daz to make the animations. Gives you a more realistic, subdivided body which animates better plus the recognizable head from the game figure (which can be converted to quads and then subdivided so it looks better).

This is more work than most r34 animators are capable of doing as it requires more knowledge of modelling and rigging as well as editing texture maps. There are some animators who do this (you can tell usually by looking at the shoulders, knees and elbows. If it's a smooth subdivided mesh they've done this, if they're low poly and "jaggy" then it's SFM).

If you know how to do it you're better off doing it that way. SFM has shit lighting and a shit render engine and no subD. But that's only if you care about what it looks like. Most porn animators don't. What they care about is making as many renders as they possibly can as quickly as they can because that's the only way to make money. That's another reason why SFM is popular for porn. Looks like crap, sure but who the fuck cares. It's all about cranking out as much output as you can to make money. Rip game models, convert BVH animations, set up a single spot light on top of the camera and then render a loop.

you need to move the camera back and zoom into it about 30-40 FOV. Shots like that looks like gmod, and doesn't really complement the models well.

That and you need to change the lighting around.

Not that guy but what if your main motivation to animating in the first place was you being horny.

I had like 50+ unfinished projects that i haven't touched since i was "done" with them.

I purged it all as i didn't have some models and couldn't be arsed to find them again

But it wasn't bad, i find myself amazed by how decent it is for a quick fap project, but i couldn't bring myself to continue, didn't know where to start or it was messy beyond repair.

I think i need to set up some workflow rules and habits if i ever am to finish a project.
