For me? Academic curiosity, mostly. I do a lot of race-building for my tabletop games, as I find the stereotypical elf/dwarf/halfling cast to be pretty uninspired--they're all just humans of varying heights with either pointy ears, long bears, or hairy feet. Biological variation across species lines should be far greater than that.
But, in developing these ideas, I have to be careful not to cross the line into furshit. And that line is incredibly bizarre and inconsistent. Does something have to have a human-like nose to be acceptable, or can an aquatic race lose the nose entirely and have nares instead? Ungulates are generally tolerated, now that draenei and tieflings are so common, but how far can stance be pushed? Can you have a long-tailed race that has to lean forward in order to balance properly, or does that become furry?
It's fascinating to me how we draw these arbitrary distinctions, especially since people aren't capable of agreeing on exactly what they are.

Faun are woodland spirits with goat features. Quite helpful to those in need, and better looking.
Both are from Greek origins, and yet are different creatures. Fauns and satyrs were originally quite different creatures: whereas fauns are half-man and half-goat, satyrs originally were depicted as stocky, hairy, ugly dwarfs or woodwoses with the ears and tails of horses or asses. Satyrs also were more woman-loving than fauns, and fauns were rather foolish where satyrs had more knowledge.

As a comment on Pan, Satyrs & fauns, I'll just leave this here. A sculpture recovered from Pompeii, circa 79 A.D. No telling how old the statue was before it was buried in volcanic ash, but it's representative of a common theme of the time. And for some time prior.
The statue is identified by different people as both Pan and as a satyr. Pan tends to be depicted as somewhat more human, and his distinctive Pan Pipes are missing, so I lean toward a satyr as the more accurate interpretation here.
As far as the fur hatred goes ... Jesus fuck. The diaper play and scat fetish threads deserve that sort of hatred. As other candidates that could be mentioned.
