I get the feeling that you guys actually played the 2nd game. I loved the first playing with my brother. He tried the 2nd and said it was terrible, so I never played it. Any good?

Depends on what you want. KoToR 2 is a hot mess, even with the cut content patched of back in, and once you start playing with weapon mods the game can be completely broken. So on the level of gameplay and presentation KoToR is superior. That said, KoToR 2 is one of my all time favorite games, for a few reasons. First, the writing, KoToR 2's central theme was (to me) all about motivation, why the characters did what they did, were who they were, and was constantly trying to get you to question why you were making the decisions you were making. I'm not going to argue it was totally successful, but it was really interesting. Second Sara Kestelman's Kreia, she brought that character to life in a way that made even some of the sketchier lines work. Finally the world building and deconstruction, KoToR 2 felt like a galaxy in the aftermath of a brutal civil war between two groups of Jedi. There are refugees everywhere, shit's just being held together.
tl;dr: KoToR 2 is terrible in terms of being incomplete, buggy and kinda disjointed, great in terms of being really well written and having a lot of interesting ideas.

this >>338117 exactly. KotOR 1 was great in its own way, but its plot was pretty run-of-the-mill "stop the bad guy and his destructive master plan". KotOR 2 was more cerebral, made you think more. One cutscene in particular that I remember is when you go to Nar Shaddaa. If you're light side and give credits to a poor refugee, you see him get mugged for the credits he just got, putting him back to where he started, with a bruise to boot. The game has a knack for making you think about and question your (and others') actions and motivations, and you don't really see that in KotOR 1.
