I had that same experience with Nimbin actually, or a similar one. Used to be a great place to meet interesting people (heaps of old professors and doctors out there) and get good weed, but then the police decided to crack down on it, and now there's speed deals going on in pretty much every alleyway.
I honestly think that reducing the amount of drugs in our society is important, of every kind, but the whole war on drugs shit just ruins towns.

I remember hearing that about the museum, I always thought it was electrical issues though. They rebuilt it, but people just sell speed in there, so it's not really the same.
Police presence increased for a little while, but last I saw they toned it back, and only really ramp it up near when people harvest. But it's really a hell of a lot worse now, people still grow, but it just feels like it's turning into another shitty town with a drug problem, instead of just a pretty chill hippy sort of area.
There's still some of the old crowd around up there though, just strike up a convo with someone around the place and ask how long they've been there for, if it's more than a few years, odds are they're probably selling, or know who does at least. That's how I always found decent sellers, half of the hills around there is dedicated to crops, so everyone kind of knows who's growing if they're local.
