Hey Boogie if you are lurking or around, The advice you gave in the last thread about liking what you draw was a huge help. It's way more encouraging to just enjoy what you are doing rather than it feeling like a chore. If i sound like a faggot right now i'm sorry.
anyway i was wondering when you were just starting out what exercises you did to practice?
did you just draw what you wanted? or did you do drawing exercises like gestures and such daily? genuinely curious.

Not Boogie, but I can definitely say it helps to practice things like that regularly. Gestures, features, perspective, foreshortening, shading...all good things to practice regularly and it doesn't have to take a while lot of your time either - I recently had to take a class for my job, and instead of taking notes I cracked out a bunch of little practice drawings.

Everyone learns differently, what I did isn't important (and isn't the best role model). The only real thing that makes a difference is the split between learning something and actually understanding it.
For example you can "learn" a calculus equation by writing it down over and over again, but you can't really utilize it, derive from it, or do anything more with it without knowing why the inputs are there, where they come from or what the algebra under the hood is doing. Unless you want to regurgitate one linear process repeatedly, drawing's no different.
That said, what you practice isn't as important as /how/ you practice. You don't need to draw a boob 10,000 times to understand how convey weight in a pair, and if you are going to draw a boob 10,000 times it needn't be done purely via the classical definition of "studies". (You /could/ of course, don't take this as "hurr never do practice drawings", what I mean is you needn't follow any one piece of advice solely because me or /ic/ or whoever told you it). This isn't public schoolin where you learn via a teacher's methods, you're free to determine what works best for you and follow it.
For instance I learn best by trial and error, which is why I pick up new shit very quickly and why my usual subjects don't settle into a 'regular' build until the ~3rd sketch of them - it's also why in-scene perspective is a weakness for me. Every process has strengths and faults. If you learn best visually or aurally or whatever then come up with you own way to educate yourself via that medium over Youtube, books, self-study or take a class.
Try some customized version of the Shrimp Method.
