So I've been fucking around in ren'py a lot, and after spending 2-3 hours writing and coding a scene that only takes the user about 45 seconds to get through, it occurs to me just how much fucking work it is to build a game from scratch.
I'd have to quit my job and do nothing else to get something worthwhile out within a year. And that's not even counting the art.

How does /stg/ feel about grinding?
Working on a game and most of what I have scripted/planned out is just linear progression, i.e. you do the one event, then the next event is unlocked, then the next one, etc.
But I'm thinking if I do it that way the game will end up being pretty damn short. So I'm wondering if I should pad it out by making the player grind for points/money before certain things happen, like the way you have to buy and then read all of the books before your imagination can increase in witch trainer.
On the one hand it makes the coding a lot more tedious, but the game will be longer and (in my opinion) the eventual climax will be more satisfying from having to wait longer.
Thoughts?

It's a delicate balance. I believe that players will better enjoy the reward if they have to work for it to some degree, but you have to be very careful not to cause boredom or frustration. Witch Trainer was awfully close to boredom in its initial released form.

It's lazy and its inclusion in these games sets a bad standard. You want to create less but have your game feel like more? Put in grinding. You can't think of a way to make your game feel like a game and not a VN? Put in grinding. But as the field becomes more saturated with games, people aren't going to put up with too much of that shit.
Akabur's only getting away with it because he's the only serious motherfucker on the field right now, and there aren't any refs. When Injustice, Rogue-like, and Korra Trainer come out with art at least equal to Akabur's, his whole world is going to start crashing around him, because that's only the beginning. This is a zero-sum game. Not to mention that Iris Quest will take a little bite out of his fan base.

I'd prefer a more artful solution to your problem. Even if it has to be a grind at least make sure it's a more fun grind. For example I think the job system in PT was a better grind than the books / writing in WT because the jobs were still sexual in nature and didn't repeat scenes over and over unless you asked. Unique quest lines to get to content is also likely more fun than gold grinding.

This is a fundamental misrepresentation of parody and copyright, most often peddled by people that want to justify not paying for things.
The fact is, "getting paid" has absolutely NOTHING to do with the legality of a parody work. Parody provisions have nothing to do with making a profit, they have to do with the content itself.
If you make a product that legally qualifies as fair use parody because of the way it is designed, then that remains true whether you did it for free or make a million bucks off it. If the work you made is found to not qualify for parody protections, then it doesn't matter whether you made a million bucks or gave it away for free, they can still hit you for it.
Now, parody law is very subjective, and chances are that if some indy artist goes up against a company with million dollar lawyers, they will lose without question, but in an ideal world where everyone had a fair shot at a fair outcome, parody would protect both free and paid projects.
In realistc terms, the only thing keeping lawyers from attacking every rule34 artist on the planet is that it's not worth their money to bother. Even sending out C&D letters would cost them hundreds or thousands in legal fees, and they just don't care enough, certainly not enough to go to court against artists that would likely go broke. The main thing to avoid is pissing them off enough that they feel it's worth blowing money on sending a message.
So now you know, any time some Internet cheapskate tries to peddle "well, they shouldn't charge for this because then it would break parody protection," you can tell them to shove it.

If you use the "default Variable name" method, you can define them anywhere you like, and they will automatically be loaded at start-up. If you use other methods to define a variable, you might want to put them at the start anyways, or at the very least put them in an init block. If you ever try to use a variable before giving it a value, it'll throw up an error.

Grinding IS bad. It's NOT positive and simply re-uses shit the player HAS ALREADY PLAYED to make the game seem longer. Going through a dungeon again for experience and making that available is fine; forcing the player to repeat the same situation is not. The problem with Rogue-like isn't that it doesn't have grinding; it's that it has very little in-scene writing content and a really fucked up sense of progression. Grinding is fucking lazy and means you can't be assed enough to put the full amount of work in. Including enough content to make up for the lack of grinding is a lot of hard work. Deal with it.
Akabur, SR7, and Oni are all jews who want all the Patreon bucks to themselves so they do it themselves but since they're doing everything they skimp out, while feeling like they're doing enough. Teams with dedicated roles will make this genre better.

The final stats aren't decided yet. I made these up as place holders until they're set in stone.
The gameplay shouldn't be too complex. You won't need anything more than a mouse. The inventory is there mainly to manage outfits for the different girls.
