I have been palling on starting a web comic series of my own for quite some time now which isn't really porn. Technically some lewd stuff could fit in at some points though.
Got story and characters and everything.

I mostly agree with your statement as far as my own preference goes. I don't see why sexual content has to be seperated from non sexual content with a barbed wire fence.
There are however a few issues with doing this kind of approach. Putting the nswf label on your comic already kinda limits your viewership. The question is if it is worth it there when you got about 2 occurences in a ~1200 page story.
In my mind you would have to ramp it up some for it to make sense.
This is why i am tending towards the second series option at the moment.
Alternatively you could also just do the comic as normal and leave out the sex scenes at first.
Just so on the offchance you get somewhat popular you can bring them in later and use them as bait to gauge patreon supporters for money.

I'm sick of my wants being ignored because I'm not in a big enough group to be profitable (sucks being middle class dunnit). The people who want all porn all the time are evidently legion, but I've never met one. And the ones who don't want any at all can suck it as far as I'm concerned. In the old days, things had brief instances of what is arbitrarily considered 'nsfw' in this day and age, and they had them because they ought to. You have a bath scene, you have a little lovemake. You could save the NSFW stuff for patreon but then it'd be for those who want want. That'd work if your comic has some kind of cheesecake like Spinnerette. If you want the NSFW crowd that'd be the way to go. If you want a comic that just happens to have nudity and sex then I would hold off on sectioning them behind patreon.

If you have concerns you can always start off slow. Tease and hint at sex. So long as the reader knows that it's porn they will stick around for a bit.
Just don't do what Demon Dregs is doing. It's a porn comic that's 90% not porn, especially these last couple chapters. And the art is so good, too.

I don't like criticizing other people but the guy who writes and draws it is very talented but he obviously doesn't care for doing porn. He releases a page from time to time and the chapter before went 10 boring pages before even a boob showed up and then the sex comes across as boring.
Not to mention he gets angry at being heckled by anons on tumblr and uses it as an excuse to push back a page.
And the comic had a nice beginning to it, too. The first couple chapters were charming and sexy at the same time.

Questions:
How far apart is too far apart for new pages? I currently work full time and have a life outside pornographic art, so I'm concerned I wouldn't be able to dedicate enough time toward such a thing to update all the time. Would twice monthly be too sparse for something formatted like a print comic?
I've got two ideas in mind, and I'm not sure which I'd rather pursue. Either way, the timing thing worries me.

It's hard to get away with that (especially in print comics where so fucking little happens per page and it's really meant to be enjoyed in 20-page chunks) but if you can really genuinely pull people in, and give them a little actual progression each page (not always easy. sometimes you have to push yourself harder during the necessary-but-less-engaging updates to crank them out) then you can do it. I cite Camp Sherwood. 100 pages over the course of.. what, 3 years? and people are still checking like mad for updates when they arrive, sparsely. When there was a hiatus someone even tried just continuing it themselves. You just need to pull people the fuck IN
