What objectively makes for a good high school age protagonist? If you HAD to incorporate high school into the setting, how do you do so?
Not a beta self insert for starters
Not some normalfag or chuuni pandering gary stu.

Textbook example of 10/10 high school protagonist:
- Smart & logical
- Not beta, he took the initiative French Kissing a God to save the universe
- Snarky & funny internal monologue
- Man of action
- Considerate to others but within reason
- Also has flaws that he is lazy, somewhat dishonest unreliable narrator, and sometime can be ungrateful
TLDR; Have some personality for the protagonist, and not make him blank slate self insert (Coconuts-kun, cough cough). Say you what you want about Lelouch, but he's also a decent protagonist

>lazy
That alone brings me very close to drop a show. It's not the case with Haruhi, but I'm fed up with bored and lazy MCs.

They should have some sort of quality that distinguishes them from other people.
This quality actually needs to be demonstrated.
This quality should be at least somewhat sympathetic, or be balanced out by other sympathetic traits if it isn't.
They should behave in a way that vaguely resembles how actual humans behave.

All 4 of them were god tier.
But seriously though, Hidenori and Yoshitake were textbook example of high school protagonist. Goofy but trying to be cool, bros before hoes, kind of pervs, spaghetti spiller but at the same time unfettered and still try to make moves on girls
