God fucking dammit. I binge read this whole fucking manga, and holy shit... the ending tears me apart for some reason.
I'm not sure how to feel right now
>>
Because he's more human than you initially think.
>>
Because a gag manga doesn't deserve to be this sad.
>>
>>138940200
Me too anon. Someone posted that picture yesterday and I was expecting something big from the end, but damn it hit me pretty hard.

Hit me hardest when the girls had those dead eyes and pretended not to know him. And I thought the principal and various others didn't notice Sumire was a puppet because they were idiots in a gag manga. Damn...

Also anyone wanna discuss just who the old guy was? It seems he was just a guy who goes school to school using his puppet to connect with kids who were bullied/had no friends but I feel like there's more to it than that. The author said he was going to bring the old guy's identity a secret to his grave but I wanna know, dammit!
>>
the thing that upsets me the most about this manga is that we never get to know the relationship between teh woman puppeteer and the old man. Other than that it was an amazing series and i feel kind of bad that i didn't start with 17 sai in order to get the full impact of that ending.
>>
>>138941246
part of me though he was at least a little supernatural especially at the end when we see the characters age up but he still pretty much looks the same
>>
>>138940200
It's that very rare feeling of finishing a manga and the ending is actually good, and not shit. Why is it so hard for manga to have good endings.
>>
>>138941316
To be fair, someone his age probably wouldn't visibly age as much as those highschool girls would. Still, That does explain how he was able to take such a beating.

>>138941398
I think part of that is because many come up with the story and have no idea where they are going and how they want to end it. An ending like this was probably thought out in advance.
>>
>>138941246
I interpret the old man as a kind of metaphor for the author himself, a kinda weird old guy trying to write from the perspective of a teenage girl.
Sumire's (the old mans) friends I feel represented the fans of his work, and how they grew and accepted his work as well as himself as an artist.
The ending made me tear up because it felt like a big thank you from the author to his fans, even though he was moving on.
>>
>>138941398
Because serial mangaka have no idea when they're going to get axed.

I also binge read this yesterday.
I didn't find this sad to tear up as some anons say, in fact I founded it sweet as it basically tells you how the old man has been living. I also expected it at some point looking back in how Sumire recalls the kid in elementary school just wondering how he has been doing all those years.

I would had found it sad if they actually revealed the puppet or his identity
>>
Do I read 17 or 16 first?
>>
Thank you for reminding me of this manga. Read it years ago and it made me feel like nothing before it, great manga.
>>
>>138940200
Anyone else think that the flashbacks to Sumire's elementary school were just a lie? The fact that the old man was still at the highschool all those years later makes me doubtful that he ever went to elementary school. I personally think it was all made up to keep the illusion that Sumire was a real girl, despite him probably only trying to connect with the highschoolers and give them friends.
>>
OP here, just head about Sumire 17-sai!!
Is this a sequel or something? 16 seemed to be wrapped up entirely
>>
>>138942717
I believe that Sumire 17-sai was actually before Sumire-16 and got cancelled for whatever reason and the author rewrote it into Sumire 16.
>>
>>138942717
Apparently 17-sai was published prior to 16-sai.

This is my first time hearing of it as well, though
>>
Yeah, 17sai was published before 16sai.

BTW, The girls at the end of 16-sai are cast of the 17-sai. Check the faces/hair features between them. A bit of continuity the author added, which I think is a nice touch.
>>
16 first, then 17
>>
>>138941720
Just read 16.
>>
>>138940200
Legitimate masterpiece. It was such a stupid concept but it was done so perfectly that it worked out great.

Third series when?
>>
>>138943988
Yeah. Sumire is why I read manga. It's the type of story that could never succeed in any other media.
>>
>>138944817
Hopefully never.
The manga ended satisfyingly, that's pretty much a miracle in manga, it doesn't need to be ruined with a lackluster sequel
>>
Woman puppeteer chapters were the best.
>>
Will this ever be localized?
>>
any more manga like this? genre doesnt matter
people getting helped
nice warm moments
episodic
>>
Fuck graduation stories man. My fucking heart can't take more high school friends splitting up.
>>
>I'm the same age as the girls in the final chapter of Sumire 16-sai
>I've done nothing but fail at college and various jobs since I got out of high school
>I still keep in touch with the people from high school I actually liked

but, why do I hurt so bad?
>>
>>138941246
Well personally, if I could find a way to live as an eternal genki schoolgirl who brings happiness in Japan I'd do it.

He's just an old man living the dream.

This manga is a fucking masterpiece that kicks you in the feels almost every chapter.

There's also Sumire 17 but it doesn't have a whole lot of chapters.
>>
>>138940200
It becomes infinitely more sad when you realize why he's crying.
>>
>>138948421
It's crazy because after a while you totally forget about the old man unless the author puts him in focus on purpose.

It was actually pretty funny. They leveraged the absurdity of the situation quite well. One of those odd situations where an anime wouldn't have been as funny, because it works best to show how stupid it looks in reality.
And they did well with swapping between the mannequin and the actress as required.

>>

Aw shit man, you'd have a fun time trying to find it now.
It was never subbed, and wasn't particularly popular at the time, which is eight years ago now.
Trawling through wherever you might find raws and hoping against hope I think is your best bet at this point.

I'm glad how it ended. At first I suspected that he had a daughter who died and he's living her life for her but that would've been too grim.
Good story, warmed my heart many times.

That was also my interpretation exactly, I was confused when I found out it's not official.
It works well if you look at the puppets as stereotypes of the average high school manga characters.
>>
The old man is a former actor and theater group member. He watched as his Troup fell apart as theater became less and less popular thanks to modern society and the younger generation failing to take interest.

So he sets out to raise awareness by going from highschool to highschool and showing just how realistic and deep the world of acting is by playing a highschool girl with the aid of a modified store mannequin he found while rummaging in a dumpster behind a hot topic for something to sell for food money. Its where he found the black clothes too.

He's crying at the end because its obvious none of the girls he spent so much time on were inspired by his work to get into the field of theater.

Just so you know

Black clothes are common in Japanese theatrics; it means the audience are supposed to ignore him

Not just in Japan, it's common in mime play as well.

The 17 is actually the first one he made, but he decided to make a proper story so he jumped on the timeline and made a new story during sumire's 16 years.
>>
>>138953744
Is he ever going to continue 17?
>>
>>138951851
There is an adoption but its old, cant find any sources. i doubt it has a translation even.
>>
>>138953229
Are you implying that out of work theater performers scrounging in dumpsters can afford proper Noh Theater attire?
>>
>>138953785
Well you should at least know what you're talking about first.
Sumire 17 came before 16.

Do you even read the thread?
>>
>>138953855
I read the thread. I just think it would be nice if he closes 17 as well.
>>
Manga is so easy to binge read. It kind of hurts when you finish something you really like.
