I think the anime downplayed the effort Tomoya put in after all.
I've stalled this show because it didn't seem to be going anywhere. The Episode 0 thing was a lot more interesting than the main show turned out to be. Just an otaku ranting about character archetypes in what I guess was supposed to be cleverly self-commentary? But it's not new or clever really. And it doesn't go anywhere. In 3 episodes he's still trying to write a premise and still trying to get people to work with him, and I find it hard to be engaged in the romance aspects when the characters don't do anything except sit around talking about VNs.

You might notice a lot of their adaptations have a really screwy idea of the way the world works because they're producers outlook is mostly centered around pandering to otaku. Everything tends to have to be viewed through the lens of how a selfish shut-in otaku would feel about a situation otherwise yeah it makes absolutely no sense at all. In any case the original author of this story claims to have lost sway with the anime to the producer a long time ago, the former of whom had some more specific character points in mind he wanted to show and the latter of which just wants to pander with attractive female designs and thinks that anything else doesn't really matter because the target audience doesn't really care about coherent story and character development anyway. Both are pretty much right.
