Getting caught back up to LH2, starting from episode 14. (after the shitty valentine's day episode)
2nd half is much better than the first. First half had too much akatsuki samey shit filler, the only good episodes were gamer speech and gold episodes. I love that chibi ninja but she was being such a cunt in those episodes.
2nd half has a different thing every episode, and a good focus on the characters. I don't mind the scrub episodes since my favorite episodes in LH1 was Rudy episodes.
Mamare-sensei is a really good writer, his characters are really 3-dimensional and it is impossible to butcher that too badly even with a studio like DEEN. And I don't think DEEN is just phoning it in, sure you can do >DEEN screencaps, but a lot of the filler content feels like it has a touch of love even though a lot of it was a swing and a miss.
It's nice how the characters continue to cope with their new world, people sometimes said it was bad how the characters never care about being stuck in the MMO, but you see they are still growing and learning. It keeps that balance of the characters getting accustomed to their new world and the general world-building that was there in the original.

on the contrary, i feel like he's devoted his focus entirely on the world-building aspects of log horizon that he's completely neglected any semblance of character development since episode 1 of the show, besides for literally solely minori
every other character is a cardboard cutout, with shiro being the biggest culprit. he's done or thought absolutely nothing that would give him a semblance of a real personality. they're all archetypes that've been pretty lazily thrown in.
it doesn't make the show necessarily bad, but you just have to go in knowing that you're getting (almost) nothing in the character development sector.

a lot of ground was covered in the first season. just because the pace changed at the start of s2 you lose your shit? the pacing in the first cour was handled expertly IMO. particularly in akatsuki's kuren arc where the build up of suspense leading up to the final fight made the pay off so much more rewarding.

Volume 6 was a bore to get through because most of it is Akatsuki and the Princess moping. The Overskill/Teachings are what saved it, and the final fight was pretty good.
Volume 7 was good through the entire thing.
In the first half, the anime decided to anime both of these simultaneously because they take place at the same time, basically. While this helps with the initial drag of Volume 6 it also kills the good parts of Volume 7. I can't say if this was a good or bad decision, honestly.
The Valentines episode, while mostly filler, also had an essential scene from the novels, so I'll excuse it.
The Kanami episode was rushed as all fuck and mostly unexplained. Reading spoilers after going through the episode, I thought they could use at least two episodes on it, to explain more about Frog's and Kanami's Overskill, and the Geniuses
The Scrubs arc started out alright. But then it fell onto the same bore that was Volume 6, which is way too much moping. I do like the important shit that's happening around, but Isuzu isn't helping.
I don't mind the QUALITY as much as I thought I would, either.

Found this couple weeks old post, and it accurately sums up my opinions of episode 18. This is the kind of log horizon I remembered. Although I will add Dariella is a cool character too, compared to Isuzu/Rudy drama, you can tell Dariella is also going through her own drama of not having to be the bad quest NPC she was programmed to be. This is why I loved Log Horizon.

The last 3 episodes are great because of the setting intrigue. The concept of there being only 42 songs, the fact that everything's run through an auto-translator, how people who were forced to leave important things behind treat death in this world. The direction has taken a step up too if you couldn't tell. I'm only talking about the last 3 episodes. If all you drew from that was a cripple getting beat up and Isuzu not having confidence, then you need to start getting your head up and running.
Tohya's experience runs in perfect parallel with the odyssey knights, he lost everything in the real world and gained everything from the apocalypse. The fact that they can't understand each other makes perfect sense. Isuzu's inferiority complex and solid view of cold reality also make perfect sense. And she still doesn't think she's a professional, she's only singing at the end because she couldn't stand the knights' view of the world and realized she had the power to make a difference.
Belittling charaters' experiences and struggles is a terrible way to watch anime. What constitutes as a mature thought process is completely subjective.

What is the difference between Nureha-sama and Kanima-sama? I kept hearing about them last cour, and this cour they seem connected but I am still confused about what is their role in the story. I assume they were both PCs at some point but what are their goals and motivations?

That's what I was talking about. I didn't feel like explaining it, though, because I have a lot of other threads to get mad mad mad about today and not enough time.
I was only calling them the Akatsuki/Overskill/Teachings arc as a point of reference.
Since I didn't explain it well, I meant the idea of taking a 2-dimensional character like Akatsuki ("SHE IS A ROLEPLAYER SHE RPS A NINJA GET IT?") and giving her the whole "I want to get stronger" arc, and tying it in at the same time with the reveals about the moon, the sea of memories, and what all those weird dreams were about, was completely new and on-point.
Also, the introversion: The person she chose to become, that she couldn't become in the real world, is just as socially isolated in the end. No ability to communicate meant no friends, few party dungeon crawls, zero guilds, and zero raids. Hence, zero phantasmal loot. She also couldn't ask for help with anything, and suffered from that until the maple story tea babysitter club became actual friends.
Despite all of that, she hit level 90. That means she spent a lot of time alone, isolated, wondering if she'd ever be able to connect to another human being even in a fantasy world.

The scrubs arc grew into something good by the end with the Wyvern battle and introducing the Odyssey knights into the story, which was a nice shift in that up till now we haven't really seen that many people truly distraught at being trapped in the new world, but their arc also spent far, far too long dilly dallying about. I can only watch so many scenes of them being excited for their upcoming road trip before I want the actual roadtrip to happen, or making food or whatever. It lacked momentum until the last few episodes.Would cuddle the fluff all day
