This show was probably discused to death the past week, but for reasons i couldn't watch the first episodes of last week, so today i finished "Rakugo Shinjuu"

Its pretty fucking amazing, got me hooked up the 47 minutes all along. Really solid contender for AOTS in my opinion

What do you think /a/ ?
>>
>>136014525
I thought it was just okay, honestly. My real issues were that I'm not a huge fan of MC and that developments felt like they were being pushed along too briskly. I did like the rakugo and all, but I didn't think the episode was incredible or anything.
>>
>>136014525
Thought it was quite easily the best episode so far this season. A good number of others on /a/ seem to share this opinion. However seeing as it isn't CGDCT expect it to get branded hipster, pretentious and even fujoshit by people who are really shitposting.
>>
>>136014525
I have like nothing negative to say. It was gorgeous to look at and the direction was top notch. Characters were developed nicely right out of the gate, I like them all and I'm interested in seeing the story progress. Soundtrack is magnificent. Quite a bit happens I'm the episode but it never felt rushed, I was captivated throughout. I'm running out of things to compliment.
One of those shows that I knew would be good but was unsure of its entertainment value, I think it really delivered so thank goodness for that. Great start to the year.
>>
>>136014525
I'm already almost certain it'll be one of the best anime of the year. Top 3.
>>
>>136015375
Are you seriously saying you're certain a show with one episode out will be top three out of a hundred-plus shows, about forty with one episode out?
>>
>>136015467
You say that but it's rarely hard to guess what the best stuff of the year will be. Not that guy, but with TV looking as weak this year as last it'll probably be up there if it doesn't take a nosedive in quality (which I can almost guarantee won't happen).
>>
>>136015628
> with TV looking as weak this year as last
You've got tons of shows that aren't announced yet, and several very good ones in the wings. I just think this is really premature.
>>
>>136014525
Pleasantly surprise how much I enjoyed watching scrawny old man sit and tell me a play. If anyone told me the anime was about watching people tell and try to pjs out a story while sitting the whole time I would have considered it boring.
>>
It's pretty damn good and I'm glad to see that the master wasn't just out to get MC-kun.

If the quality stays the same throughout the show in terms of direction and storytelling this will definitely be one of the best anime this year.
>>
>>136014525
It's fucking fujocrap with bishi oldman x purisoner while the shoujo is getting ntr'd.
>>
>>136015704
Well obviously, it's just that surprises like that are pretty rare. What are you hyping this year for TV? Pretty much everything I'm really looking forward to in 2016 is a movie, there are some good ones coming out.
>>
>>136015817
They finished animating it first quarter last year, quality should be consistently good. Director seems to have a good grasp of the content as well. I'm optimistic.
>>
>>136014525
I give it an A+ for the premier but we'll have to see episode 2 to get a good assessment of where the series is going. It could end up being more than seasonal fodder and become a standout show in general.
>>
I take it no fansub group will be picking it up?

This. It was really nice. Even though I was watching an animation of an old man telling a story, I found myself surprisingly enthralled.

I like the characters. I like the OST. (Who knew jazz went so well with rakugo?) I like the general direction it's going.

Too early to judge how good the show is, but it is easily the best first episode I've watched so far this season. It's amazing how fast those 47 minutes passed.
>>
I agree with much of what has already been said:
-The first episode was amazing
-it will be a fantastic show IF that level of quality can be maintained
-it will not be widely appreciated on /a/ even if it turns out to be fabulous all the way through, there's a very limited audience among anime fans for series like this
>>
>>136018018
>-it will not be widely appreciated on /a/ even if it turns out to be fabulous all the way through, there's a very limited audience among anime fans for series like this
Have you been paying attention at all? This has had the best response of any new series' first episode this season, both on /a/ and in preorders.
>>
>>136018195
There are tons of shows that get a lot of praise but are never widely watched just because the premise isn't appealing to your average anime watcher.

>[HorribleSubs] Musaigen no Phantom World - 01 [720p].mkv 41348
>[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 01 [720p].mkv 29866
>[HorribleSubs] Boku Dake ga Inai Machi - 01 [720p].mkv 35864
>[HorribleSubs] Hai to Gensou no Grimgar - 01 [720p].mkv 33022
>[HorribleSubs] Active Raid - 01 [720p].mkv 31395

>[HorribleSubs] Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - 01 [720p].mkv 18977

As you can see the most popular release on nyaa in terms of downloads in only around half to two thirds as popular as similar releases for the bigger shows. A lot of a thread being positive praise isn't all that surprising when a lot of people will never touch it and the majority of people who pick it up were already wanting it to be good. This has what in the past would have been called a "vocal circlejerking fanbase" by shitposters. I mean it is more popular than one of your regularly unwatched shows that receive a lot of praise but overall its number of downloaders are pretty low. Obviously I am not saying nyaa downloads make a perfect picture but it is the most popular source of anime for regular /a/ posters.
>>
>>136018619
Widely watched isn't the same as widely appreciated, though. I'd say this and Boku Dake have gotten more praise and pop up more in discussions of the best first episode than anything else. Something like Phantom World definitely isn't the most widely appreciated show of the season, it's just the one with everyone watching it so they can shitpost about it.
>>
>>136018760
To be widely appreciated on /a/ surely it must first be widely watched? I wouldn't deny that it has been widely appreciated by those who have watched it though. This happens to a lot of critically acclaimed shows on /a/ while they are airing, esepecially when they are in some way different from your average show, which is usually, be it different art style or interesting direction. They tend to get relatively low number of watchers compared to whatever is flavour of the month and lots of praise from those who are actually watching. Think of it this way even, if we assume those nyaa numbers represent /a/ entirely (which obviously they don't just for sake of argument though), if half of the people who watch Phantom World even thought it was a good show there would still be more people who thought that was good than could possibly know this show was good.
>>
>>136018760
Phantom World is appreciated, though, albeit in a completely different way. People certainly appreciate dem tiddies and Kirby and well-animated fanservice once you get past the pro-KyoAni vs anti-KyoAni shitflinging.

If anything, this show is likely to have calm, positive threads with minimal disagreement, which other shows can't necessarily boast.
>>
>>136018884
If it continues doing well in Japanese pre-sales I don't know how long that will last though. That will attract a lot of shitposters disappointed their favourite show isn't doing well while this one is with "fujoshit" type comments and also a lot of curious people who want to see what they hype is about but will find that the show isn't really to their taste and then be mad about its success.
>>
>>136018865
>To be widely appreciated on /a/ surely it must first be widely watched?
I guess it depends on how we're using widely watched. It's not in the most popular tier, but it's nearer to that end than to dead thread territory. I think we might be going too far into semantics here, but basically I think there is actually a fair-sized audience for this kind of show and that that audience has had a very favorable response to it.
>>
>>136014525
6/10.
If you are a girl though, it's probably 9/10, since the catering is clear.
>>
>>136019056
I will admit it has a larger audience currently than I was expecting and I think that is largely due to the positive response from the few people that picked it up early, word of mouth so to speak. I have seen many comments along the lines of "wasn't planning on watching this but all the positive comments got me too, I wasn't disappointed" and it is certainly larger in terms of audience than shows that would usually get thrown into the "hipster" and "pretentious" bin by people looking to shit on something for no reason. I am of course being relative when I say widely watched, relative to other anime on first episodes from this season it is not comparatively widely watched if we assume those numbers as representative.
>>
I like a good rakugo, the show delivered very nice on it, but I am more than cautious because of the fujoshi pandering author can kick in any minute.
>>
>>136014525
It was the best directed first episode this season like nothing else came even close to it.

Which is also interesting because it was a tv cut of two OVAs and a lot of great scenes didn't even make it into it.
>>
>>136014525
Finally a semi-significant role for Kobayashi Yuu.
>>
I liked it and hope it does well, it probably won't though because it's a genuinely adult comedy/drama with no fanservice.
>>
>>136019564
>with no fanservice.
Yet.
>>136017522
>>
If I had to use one word, it'd be 'intriguing'. I certainly appreciate the talent behind the direction and voice work, but I find the actual content somewhat boring. I plan to stick with it for a bit longer before making a decision.

Majority of anime is shit and I'm hugely 'into' anime. Probably watched more than the vast majority of posters on this board at around 750 shows. I only find 2-3 good shows a season that I watch all the way, maybe 10 a year and out of all of those maybe a couple in the year that are actually remarkable. Everything else ranges from watchable to trash. I likely watch as much anime as any 'I watch 30+ shows a season if you don't too you're a casual' type I just don't base my choices on what is current. I don't watch anime to discuss it with /a/ I watch it for enjoyment and participate in discussions on /a/ if it seems worthwhile.

Novel (not LN) adaptations are already different by nature.
Being a slow paced detective story with chara design by Asano, you're going to have a hard time making anime more "different" than that.

The fact is if your argument is easily disproven by a show that aired last season it's not a good argument even if you can think of a few good examples.

Shaft influence is pretty clear. Are you saying that's no good? I'm not the biggest Shinbo fan but he's far from bad, and Oishi is great.

Is it really? When you strip away the minimalist ugly backgrounds, flat colors and shinbo-esque nouvelle vague bullshit it doesn't look like Shaft at all.

The show reminds me way more of something like Sakamichi no Apollon.

Agree with these two to be honest I think the SHAFT is pretty obvious in the direction just toned down and without the other visual elements of SHAFT aesthetic.
