Do we have an actual WaniKani shill hanging out in these threads? As in a WK employee with financial interest in WK's fiscal success?

DJT is pretty well known around 4chan and Reddit, both of which are large internet communities with a lot interest in Japanese, possibly even visited by the bulk of potential WK customers. DJT has shat all over WK and laughed at people stupid enough to actually use an inferior version of Anki that you have to pay for. It's undoubtedly lost them a fair bit of money. If I were a member of WK management, I'd definitely consider DJT's attitude towards WK to be a problem, especially during NYR season.

>gets two posts telling him to fuck off to Reddit
>gets another two posts telling him that it's an inferior version of anki

How many times have you seen this happen in DJT?

>new learner enters DJT
>sees shitting on WaniKani
>crosses it off of their list of things to use forever; grabs anki instead

How many times do you think this has happened?

A large community hating your product has an influence on sales, whether you realize it or not.

This coincidentally changed right around the end of December. NYR season.

DJT has never, ever been pro-WK. Last year's NYR season didn't do anything to change this at all. Yet suddenly, there's something resembling a debate? With the WK side largely trying to downplay and ignore the criticisms made against WK, that being that they artificially limit your progress, don't let you have control over your own deck, and that this is obviously done in the name of making you pay them more money (around the range $200 by the time that you finish, assuming that you don't miss sessions on the regular basis), and that the only reason to pay for it is because you're too stupid to learn how anki works and are so bad with your money that you can't figure out how much a monthly fee will eventually add up to?

It's really fucking suspicious. Either the WK supporters are actually all trolls, or there is a group of WK shills ITT.
>>
I really like this book "Chuukyuu Nihongo Bunpou Yoten Seiri Point 20" cause how it arranges and explains similar grammar points but it's a pity that there's no 上級 version.
Is there some similar grammar book like this but for 上級? I tried 総まとめ but it's kind of lackluster compared to this one.
>>
>>135731904
Pretty sure it's mostly funposting. I made quite a few about WK recently.
>>
>>135731974

You should probably stop doing that, unless you want real WK supporters to become commonplace in DJT.
>>
>>135731904
You haven't even fucking tried WaniKani and you're still trying to shit on it.

>>

It gives you three "levels" of "radicals", kanji, and vocab. Check it yourself, just don't get dragged into its quagmire.
>>
>>135732317
Just remembered someone ripped the whole service to an anki deck and I'm sure the first three levels are the same. Check it through that instead.
>>
Someone make another /qa/ thread about WK. That was hilarious.
>>
>>135731134
Eh, WK's main audience is normies. As in, people who plan on taking college courses, meeting tutors, practicing writing and enjoy "nice communities." Even if people bash on WK here it's pretty easy to ignore since all of 4chan basically hates everything and DJT cant even agree on the best way to use Anki.
>>
>>135732150

I can tell you what I do know:

When I finish Core 6k, it'll be about 8-9 months after I started it. The fact that this isn't as fast as some is even more of a testament to how slow WK is compared to how fast you can be when you're motivated in anki.

I'm about to start writing production. I estimate that it will take 3-4 months, and given what I've learned to date, I can't see myself floundering. Again, using anki.

So, 10 months or so for 2200 kanji and 6k words. How much did I pay for this? $200? $100 $10? No. I paid $0 to accomplish what WaniKani charges $200 *minimum* for in a faster time than WaniKani.

>>135732227

This isn't one of those things to "agree to disagree" on, like whether your favorite movie is actually good, or whether some untested policy with equal evidence for and against will work. WK is inferior to anki by every objective measure. There's no reason to use it.
>>

>>135732288
Translation note: WK includes more real kanji as radicals than Kangxi does. So the radical counts are inflated compared to a Kangxi deck.

Level 1:
26 radicals
18 kanji
41 vocab

Level 2:
35 radicals
38 kanji
79 vocab

Level 3:
21 radicals
33 kanji
64 vocab

Perhaps a good way to stop talking about WK would be to stop obsessing over it everytime it comes up. Just post the pastebin or whatever and move on.
>>
>>135732581
Oh, that's what you're talking about.

It's very common for company employees to astroturf in reclusive communities that shit all over them. Especially on 4chan.

I don't know about "lose money" in the way you're reading it. Anon is very obviously referring to opportunity profit.

>I seriously doubt that since speed based NEET language learners aren't WK's audience.
Believe it or not, DJT is not all "speed based NEET language learners".
>>
>>135732693
Post the greentext instead.
>Contains literally wrong information
>Artificially limits your progress by making up radicals etc that don't exist
>Artificially limits your speed even if you want to faster; even if you go as fast as possible you can only go as fast as a normal anki user
>Locked in to it, you can't export your scheduling information
>Tells you whether you got something right, have to go outside the normal system to make "dad" a synonym for "father"
>The scheduling system is objectively inferior to Anki's
>Only customization is browser mods like scriptish
>Eventually ends and you're fucked if you want more content
>Costs money
>>
So should I do RTK? I feel like Core2k is kicking my ass.
>>
>>135731466

>>
WaniKani is an inferior RTK clone that locks normalfags in with pretty colors and funny memes like "The narwhal bacons at midnight xD". Anyone that falls for that on their own isn't worth saving, but I won't stand for people shilling for it. The lock-in means even an intelligent person who was only momentarily deceived will become biased in favor of it.

>>135733624

If it were the only game in town that did anything along the lines of what it does, it wouldn't be ideal, but it would probably still be the best way to go.

However, it becomes terrible when you consider that the ideal actually does exist, and that it doesn't charge you $200 to show you all of its content, which cuts off at an intermediate level, and then throw you out on your face. On the contrary, it's a tool that can be used however the user likes, and for as long as the user needs it, at no charge. There's no reason for WK to even exist when anki and Core decks are a thing.

WK offers nothing that you can't do with anki. Just use Core and KD, and you pretty much have WK.

If you're so lazy that you would drop $200 and delay your results because you couldn't be assed to spend 30 minutes to figure out how to use a program properly, that's a big personal flaw that you need to get over. If you're so lazy that you have to pay $200 to keep yourself motivated, that's possibly an even bigger flaw. If you need a support group, the WK community is like surrounding yourself with fat people who go out to get pizza after the gym when you're trying to get fit. You'd do better to surround yourself with ripped /fit/izens who will boost your confidence and make you sure of your ability to reach your goals. In either case, the solution isn't to run to WK to pay them to accommodate your flaws, the solution is to stop being a fucking idiot.

99% of the cards in that deck are extremely common. There's nothing sucky about it. On the contrary, compared to a mined deck which could potentially have rare words all over the place in the beginning, it's good to have those words stacked at the front.

I said essentially. I don't think Wanikani is *that* bad. I just think it's worse than Anki and less effective, so in the first place using it is wasting time. Especially since you'll end up on Anki in the end anyway.

You won't fail if you use Wanikani, it's not a meat grinder like RS. But it is pretty much objectively worse than an existing tool, so there is literally 0 reason to use it as far as I can tell. It'd just be a waste of time.

>>135736015

You realize that it's not just $5, right? Or is your brain incapable of thinking further than a few minutes into the future, like a dog?

If you were offered a $150 product, but they stated that you could pay in $5 increments, is that $5, or is it $150? When you're done paying, how much money have you spent? You could have spent that $150 on literally anything else, too. A nice new jacket? $150 towards a SSD? Your savings, which you could have used to pay your electricity bill before it got shut off because you're horrible with money?

That's what WK is doing. It's not a $5 or a $10 product. It's a monthly fee which will add up to a fairly noteworthy amount before you're done. They artificially limit your progress in order to make sure that they get at least the REAL full cost of their product... which impacts you not only financially, but also in that it takes what could be a 6 month task and turns it into a 18 month task. You're just another sucker who wasn't smart enough to see through their wording. You could have passed the N1 before you finished WaniKani and been out $0. Instead, you paid $100+ and are 4000 words behind. Also, if you want to review, I hope that you're ready to continue paying that low, low monthly fee until you're done with flash cards!

Tried asking this a couple of times last week but no one knew, guess I'll try again.

How would I go about saying,"I hope X did/didn't happen" when the event is in the past but you don't know the outcome. E.g. "I hope it didn't rain on your way here". Instinctively I'd go 雨が降らなかったといいです but apparently that's not grammatical, and doesn't seem to be any なかったといい on google besides when it's used as 言い. And 雨が降らなかったらいいです as the -たら conditional form doesn't seem to convey tense, and if I go 雨が降らなかったら良かった that expresses regret at something that did happen.

So how the shit do I do it?

People like you tend to be poor no matter how much money you make.

You want to hear the secret to not being a poorfag? DON'T THROW AWAY MONEY LIKE YESTERDAY'S GARBAGE. Prioritize. Consider what you need. Then consider what you really, really want. Spending money on anything else should be a moderately rare occurrence.

You don't need WaniKani. You shouldn't even want it. It's a waste of money, and a waste of time.

Here's another way that you lose money that likely flies right over your head because you don't see money as finite, don't understand budgeting, and don't see further than the current pay period: Do you have any financial goals regarding Japanese? Are you planning to apply it to your career, for instance?

WK can delay you by a year or more. That's a full year that you could have enjoyed a larger paycheck. And as the saying goes, time is indeed money. Beyond the initial cost of the product, how much did the delay brought about WK cost you? $5k? $10k?

"All kanji include furigana. Easy vocabulary. Good to start with."
This is the description for Hanahira in the reading list, yet I've seen no furigana in this game so far, forcing me to understand the vocals to find out the meaning of some words, which can be hard sometimes, especially when the MC can't make a difference between あandお.
Is there more than one version of the game? Am I doing something wrong? Are furigana actually only on rare kanji? Is the reading list wrong?

I get this. I really do. But I'll help.

The japanese お can be anywhere from o to ɒ, though it's usually ɔ. The japanese あ can be anywhere from a to ɑ, though it's usually ä.

Here's the tricky part: Most english dialects have lost the distinction between a and ɑ. And we don't have ɒ at all, so it just sounds like ɑ. Everything from a to ɒ sounds like ä to us. And our o is a range between o, ɔ, and ʌu; it doesn't go to ɒ.

You just have to get yourself used to ɒ indicating o instead of ɑ.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPA_vowel_chart_with_audio
>>
>>135739991
Thing is, she's reading あ as ɒ.
Maybe it is just because she's still half asleep, or maybe moe lolis have a weird dialect, but it's definitely ɒ, no matter how many times I repeat the vocals.
Plus my native language is French, which I think doesn't give as many difficulties to understand the Japanese pronunciation.

>>135740297
5th line of the game, 「あれ?私、布団かけてない」, if that あ is a ɑ and not a ɒ, then yes, I'm most likely deaf. But you'll most likely won't check because you're just here to enjoy shitting without knowledge of what you are talking about.
>>
>>135740478
Sounds like it's a slightly late audio cut-in, but that's clearly still an あ, and it's much closer to an ɑ than a ɒ. おれ sound like ɒ, and that's very clearly distinct from あれ.

I don't know if it's just a Frenchy thing where you don't have good ears or something, or you haven't listened to enough dialogue to be able to differentiate fucking vowels.

You might be wrong. I started reading visual novels when I was just starting out with RTK, no prior grammar/vocab knowledge, and I learned a lot. It's a bit difficult at first, but after some time you start recognizing certain words and it gets easier. As I read, I was adding cards with whole sentences and furigana (taken from jisho, AGTH/ITH help a lot with looking up words since you can just copy them). They were mostly production cards for kanji with extra vocab explanations on the back.

While it might not work for everyone, I find this way much more enjoyable than the usual textbook drills.
>>
>>135743246
Yeah, it is not needed to know a lot of vocabulary and kanji before starting, as long as you got ITH or Chiitrans, but I want at least to have grammar's basics done with because unlike kanji and vocabulary, grammar isn't simple to fully understand just by reading manga and VN.
