Why not read the manga first?
It's pretty great from a manga perspective, thought it takes about 20 chapters or so for you to get "hooked". The anime less so due to the awkward pacing and quality up until the invasion arc starts to heat up.These rank was have been especially clever for Ashihara. Ashihara originally wanted to do a sports series but JUMP already had a bunch so they suggested trying to go into some genre that JUMP was lacking; like sci-i battles. The rank wars are basically Ashihara sneaking in a sports manga style system into his sci-fi battle manga and I feel it's all the better for it.
From my perspective most sports manga are usually centered around... actual sports, however with these trigger based rank wars we basically have a brand new sport set in familiar locales. So instead of the players handling balls and pucks we get to see them slash, stab, shoot, and blow up each other in wondrous visceral combat, almost like a sci-fi gladiator pen but without the accidental maiming and lion attacks. It makes spectral and it helps supplement and strengthen the cast for when we get to the occasional alien invasions.Fun fact, gladiators rarely killed each other, the matches were partially a performance with the losers faking their death. This is due to the fact that proper gladiators had some 20 years of training and for their fights so they wanted to get the most out of their investment and not get their own actors killed pointlessly. Wild animals, captured enemy soldiers and Christians were fair game to kill though.

Anime is cheap, but manga is fucking good. It's a slow developing story though, which is kind of vexing because the author puts a lot of effort into how teams operate. Long strategic battles are my preference compared to amazing art power level shit.
It's really good. Fleshed out world with a nice and developed combat system and characters thst are enjoyable. It will be even better when Mikumo stops getting wrecked at every fucking turn
