Well if you can't handle main characters who aren't super macho fairy tale "nakama power will defeat anything" bullshit level protags, this probably isn't the series for you.
Main character does a lot of crying and moping, starts out weak, makes mistakes, fails, and takes his time getting stronger, but he does one thing that a lot of other shounenshit characters never do--moves the fucking plot forward by HIMSELF. Thanks to that this show is up there with some of the most engrossing shounen-battle stories that anyone has seen recently. If that's not enough for you, your loss.

Try reading the manga. The anime tried fitting the first arc into a thirteen episode timeframe when it wasn't that long to begin with. You see much more MC development in the Stain arc. Plus the manga art is much more aesthetically pleasing, the studio doing the anime clearly hasn't gotten into the big budget animated segments yet from what I've seen of season 1.
