You can tell that Historia's past was all made up as a last moment thing. The thing is, the trainee corps were hyped up at the begining to be this harsh, competitive spartan program that only the best of the best complete let alone prevail in. But then you see how literally everyone in the main cast made it to the top 10 there even complete dumbasses like SC. And you see all these hardened veterans of that harsh training completely lose their shit the first time they come into battle, and it comes off as some edgy bullshit.
Actually focusing on the trainee corps would have had the opportunity to explain all of that and also give extra development to all characters so there would have been ambiguity who would die and we would actually give a shit.
DESU, even if it meant we got to the action later, it probably would have been a better use of our time that whatever's been going on for the last two arcs.

That plus Ymir, Reiner, and Bert all saying that they didn't get the memories leads me to believe that it's a coordinate only thing, and given how I think it gets the First King's memories around it likely only happens when the coordinate holder is eaten.
