Yes, I messed up bad. I was basically Hishiro, but also depressed and thought I was going to kill myself so I didn't bother trying to give myself a life. Now I want to live but have no idea where to start since I never gave myself the opportunity to emotionally mature or experience anything past the age of 14. I'm basically a high school kid in an adult's body, expected to do adult things. It's like Ryo told Arata when he said he wouldn't be able to progress as an adult if he can't even overcome hurdles high school kids do. I'm not completely fucked, but I am definitely behind my peers, so I'd love to take that pill.

Except many, many anime and manga, a majority even, makes some use of 'the student's job is to study!!!111' shit or by sperging out about how Highschool is for university exams and you need to dedicate 90% of your free time outside of school to extra study and you have to have a 'dream' about your future and know what you want to do, or else it's time to be a mopey bastard. Or about how 'I have no time for l-love, I need to focus on studying!'
Now I don't know whether that's true to real life over there but in anime and manga it certainly is a fact. IRL Asian cultures seem to be hivemind/worker ant conformity tier for better or worse and it seems to start virtually from the time they first start school.
I suppose they like the HS setting because it's not as bad as what's to come, at least as it's represented in the medium, but it's hardly portrayed as a chilled out time.

I thought the anime was poorly executed. Interesting concept and had the potential to really explore themes about social anxiety and the like but the anime fell flat. It was too scattered, self contradictory, had an unrealistic view of growing up, while not being very subtle on the protagonist's impact on the high school students. It felt preachy and very obnoxious.
Personally I wouldn't take the pill if I had the chance. That'd be wasting one whole year in my life.

I've actually noticed that too. There's been a lot more manga featuring mid to late 20s MCs getting with younger girls. This isn't technically one of them but this is definitely made to appeal to an audience older than teenagers but still accustomed to reading manga and its typical urban/young/highschool settings.

RE: Life never assigned a different sex "partner" before yoake and hishiro. For whatever reason, they believed one of the things hishiro needed was a "relationship". I suspect An who was supposed to be the next handler, was choosing Arata with Yoake's situation in mind. She was mentally prepped to fuck his brains out, and probably was a bit in love with him. However, the re:life project didn't ask her to strike up a relationship with arata, in fact they didn't even let her guide arata at all.
