Here in ConcepciĆ³n ( a city of Chile ), public transport isn't boring at all. You have to be attentive or you hit yourself on braking with the seat that's in front of you. It's less to do with size than it is how the US is divided into districts. In Europe the cities tend to be regional capitals that get to build infrastructure that branches out into their suburbs and satellite towns, while in the US cities are more limited to their immediate jurisdiction, and infrastructure has to go through county and state bureaucracy to get built. You want to have more control over your gearbox so that it doesn't upshift early especially when racing up or downhill. Keep the revs high so that the engine is in its powerband and to get the most out of engine braking to mitigate some of the stress on your actual brakes. Helps prevent them from overheating.
