This episode seemed like a passing of the torch from Gohan to Trunks as "the third guy next to Goku and Vegeta." Not to mention the splash cards were just Goku, Vegeta and Gohan with their families but now Trunks got his own splash card. Trunks is also the most competent when it comes to fighting for the sake of protecting the Earth. Gohan tends to get emotional, Goku's addiction to battle makes things worse, and Vegeta lets his pride get in the way. Trunks continued his training after the Cell Games and prevented the Buu Saga from happening in his timeline.

It's unlikely that we'll get to see Pan fight since she's a baby. We'll catch glimpses of her potential, and maybe an extreme DEM feat by the end of the series.
Super is meant to be what happens inbetween the end of Buu Saga and the end of Z. If she does seriously fight, it'll probably be in a sequel series focusing on the next generation of Z-Fighters. Pan should be a next-gen Goku not some second fiddle. EoZ shows that she shares Goku's love for fighting, so she should be the Goku of her group.

Nah, they'll just get the small number of humans remaining in Trunks' future to move to present time earth and everyone will live there instead.
Then Beerus will get uppity about how there can't be two Trunks' in one timeline and everyone will get together and stuff Kid Trunks into the time machine and send him on a one way trip to a barren, lifeless future so that they can keep the cool one.
