Nobody checks what you put in - it's not staffed - but I'm sure it's screened before being handed/shown to the actual Seiyuu. I don't even know if they get everything since it's likely not possible for them to consume all the stuff, it might be shared among the entire agency or excess stuff might just get thrown away.
As far as I'm aware, most people give letters, sweets or other foodstuffs, maybe some cosmetic stuff or sometimes clothes.
I know of a Japanese girl (who looked like a really cute generic riajuu) who participated with me an others for a Tane-chan flower stand at the Rhodanthe* concert:
At some other event she gave her a nice dress, which Tane-chan actually wore at a later event.
Speaking of that, flower stands are a nice way of showing your support for your Seiyuufu as well. You should definitely participate in one as well if you can. Non-private ones are usually organized for events over Tweetvite or Twipla pages, you have to google to find them.

Yes, checking the TLS radio and her Shokugeki events she can't really cook. But I still enjoyed the Shokugeki Curry SP with her, Takamina and Matsuoka where she adds a lot of wine to cooking the meat.

Considering it doesn't pay very well for the first decade (after which your roles drop), I'd imagine that a lot of seiyuu have wealthy parents and possibly live on trust funds. Supposedly Ao-chan, Sumipe and Shizuka Ito's parents are also pretty well-off.

Aoi is a single daughter and still lives with her parents (which are moderately wealthy) and grandma. And her many pets. She talks about all of them very frequently.
The thing about Aoi is that for being someone so talented at her craft, and widely praised since she was a newcomer, she still can come up as ridiculously insecure about her capabilities. The reason why she is always giving her 100% is because she feels can't afford to lose. That is her mentality. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing in a field as competitive and over-saturated as voice acting, and it's certainly endearing.
