That was unpleasant moment, but at least the MC shown that it wasnt easy for him as it looked, mourning the soldiers. He just acted on "pure logic", which makes him such bastard and dangerous person: he acted against own sentiments, believing it was the safest route for them. The episode was quite enjoyble otherwise and looking forward to rest of story.
But yeah, as with any time war theme is touched, theres many points where depending on how the show will handle them, enjoyment of the story might be diminished.

Problem of most medieval/fantasy anime is that it lacks the "warrior culture".
In Middle ages and before, most countries were at war pretty much all the time to bigger and lesser degreem and there were casts of warriors always ready to fight - and not just "just war", but conquest, pillage, murder: and it was normal, and even more than that - honorable.
Vikings, Knights orders, Mercenaries, Roman Legioners, Turkish Yanichar, Landless nobles, regular royal and noble troops, Samurai - the were plenty of people living for war and thinking nothing bad of engaging in it: war was the reality, violence was just one of means to make a living.
Attacking, murdering, enslving and pillaging the enemy was just, honorable and noble.
Yet in anime, mostly 19th/20th century mentality is represented with people unvillngly engaging in war and fighting for "protect", or because of circusces - having regrets killing, not ready to be aggressive
Even historical period in anime that shoudnt belike that - Sengoku, the Samurai era: in anime rather than portraying the bloodthirsty warlords and warriors, portrays modernized version and mentlity.
The only period in anime that for whatever reason is not like that is Three Kingdoms - where fighting and war were still cool.
Alderamin Empire is EMPIRE, wich means a country that established through constant conquest having warrior caste and emulating Roman one. The whole tone "war is hell" does not pass such era and such show. It should be about inglorious bastards striving for conquest and domintion -not weaklings forced to fight.

idk, for some reason it has a very Rokka-esque vibe to it. Every time I watch it, with the animation and how it's characters break from tradition, it reminds me of it.
