Ergo Proxy was the anime that put an end to the "intellectual anime for mature people such as myself" trend that started in the 90s, because not even the most fedora-tipping high school existentialist could overlook the fact that it was a giant clusterfuck.
Not to say that it doesn't have occasional moments of real insight, or that it's an actually bad anime, but it's still a clusterfuck that's a lot less deep that it seems at first.
