Sentai released Higurashi on Blu-Ray, without a proper 1080p upscale done by the nips. What we recieved is a shitty blurry, soft, washed out, aliased and interlaced mess. Who the fuck thought this was acceptable. They literally just upscaled it to 1080i and slapped it on a disc. Why.

If it wasn't produced in 1080p, there's zero fucking point in buying a blu-ray unless they do some crazy remastering work or remake it from scratch or something.

It wouldn't have been good if they did use it either, but it doesn't help that Sentai made things worse by trying to fit everything on less discs.

I've noticed that if you scale it down to 480p, the image looks perfectly fine, even better than the DVDs.

It's from the early days of digital, where everything was mastered at 480p, and now it's stuck there, forever.

Probably due to the higher bit-rate. The nips all use the same upscaling software for old digital blu-ray releases, and it always, without question, looks fucking godawful.

Considering that theres no higurashi blurays in japan and that it's highly likely that the nips would at least do it in 1080p, I'm going to assume that Sentai did this themselves.

they did all 24 eps on 4 discs, which is pretty standard for bluray. also it's better than funimation's 3 discs for 24 eps thing that they're doing.

The Japanese HD BDs look like absolute garbage too.
However, they recently released SD BDs for the 10th anniversary. Haven't checked them out but they should look way better.

The SD BDs are marketed as being digitally remastered, but are just the DVD footage on a BD. Is it so hard to deinterlace the 1080i footage, downscale it to 480p, and put it on a BD? Now we've got these ugly black lines down the side of the image, which I can only assume is for overscan purposes. The 1080i blurays didn't have this. Disappointing.

So Higurashi Kai's SDBD still has the overscan lines on the side, but to me it actually looks alright. I might be tired.
