I think letting Roshi fight while Yamcha needed to stay behind was the biggest insult he has ever sustained. It's one thing to have him get fucked on in a surprise attack or by something way stronger than him, but now he's somehow weaker than someone who can't even fly. They're pissing on him so hard they're basically retconning whatever strength he had left.

That isn't necessarily true, given that Tien was the one to say Yamcha couldn't handle things, and he had no input on Roshi's presence there
We all know the real reason is that they didn't want to bloat the supporting cast too much, because that's more fighting to animate, and Toriyama wanted to mix things up by bringing Roshi in for another fight after a long drought
