I can easily except it's flaws on account on there's nothing that's even trying to do the same thing. The closest thing is Spice and Wolf, which has a much narrowing scope and Log Horizon, which has too much... otaku pandering I guess? Too many things that can be made into merchandise and the like.
I'm reading the manga and love it. It fleshes out a lot of things the anime glazed over, not that it was a bad adaption by any means. I certainly seen much worst since Maoyuu ended. But there are a number of scenes that I'd love to see animated. Seeing the speech from episode 9 animated was great.
