To be honest, the Forest Of Death on the exams was way cooler than the fight on the island in the Hunter Test.
The demarcation between inspirtation and rip-off is hard. Togashi was a Naruto editor up until the Chunnin Exams, or so an anon claimed. Sasuke's motivation and premise as a character is the only thing I really think Kishi ripped off, because Kurapika is an excellent character and Sasuke starts out kinda alright but is easily among the worst characters Kishi thought of.
I am not that well-versed in Shounen I suppose, but apparently Togashi himself "ripped-off" other Shounens, in particular DBZ. And not just on Meruem's design (which is not a rip-off I think, but rather heavily inspired by Cell and Freeza). But one thing is certain:
I enjoyed Naruto's Chunin Exams way more than the Hunter Exam. The manga gets bad shortly after that, and it pales in comparison to what HxH has become, but the Chunin Exams were based. The only time it felt like the little faggots lived in a ninja world.

But he is. Think about it, not in relation to Gon but in relation to Chrollo. Hisoka spends years wanting to fight Chrollo and when he does he loses hard the author has to asspull he coming back to life. Now, if what he really wanted was to fight strong oponents he eould be satisfied with it regardlesss of the result. He fought a strong guy and lost, but the fight was good, so at most he would want to have the experience of a good fight again. Instead he gets passively frustrated and stars killing other troup members, in retalliation and also to weaken Chrollo.
In other words once he couldnt defeat a stronger person, he just started acting like a scared bitch. He does not like the fight but the defeating a weaker person than him. Those are generally one off villains that are evil just cause, and Hisoka is the same, only the author decided to focus and give him screen time.

It was the narrative of the Chunin Exams that make people accuse it of ripping off the Hunter Exams. The rules of some of the stages were suspiciously similar, such as needing to reach a certain location within a set number of days, having certain number of tags/scrolls in your possession. And then, an actual fighting tournament is the final decider of the whole thing. Kishi clearly took many of the ideas found in the Chunin Exams from the Hunter Exams.

Yes, but again, it's not just the fact that both plots follow the same trope. It's the fact that Sasuke's revenge plot is so damn similar to Kurapika's, and Kishi was completely unambiguous about it. Possessing red eyes? Check. The rest of the clan who also possessed red eyes being killed on a genocidal scale? Check. Red eyes granting the character certain abilities? Check. No one can deny that Sasuke's revenge storyline is directly influenced by Kurapika's.
