>>
People don't read manga because it's too hard, people don't read manga because it's not as entertaining.
>>
>>143974804
Literally the only reason to read manga is to get better at Japanese to become an real anime pro.
>>

>>
I don't know how to read manga. Like I can't just read a panel and keep going I have to stop and examine the art because I feel bad if I'm just rushing through it because what's the point otherwise. So it takes me like 50 minutes sometimes to read a chapter

That is supposed to be..an achievement? The rest of the world has no trouble watching movies in cinemas - in fact, only childrens' movies have dubs over here. Normal adults should be able to read subtitles quickly.

I often have no idea what going on in a manga panel if it's heavily action oriented.

I usually just watch anime blind so I can enjoy the show for what it is then just read the manga later so I can enjoy the details. I know you faggots say do it the other way around but if I did that I would be spoiled to shit then upset the anime didn't follow the manga. Reading the manga just leaves no room for discussion. At least with original anime people are always trying to figure out the show regardless if its shit.

1. Skim through for the fan service parts
2. read through it fully for the story
3. read through it for the characters
4. read through it for any deep meanings
5. read it for fun

Reading manga is often too hard for me because the translations are often far more autistic than anime subs.

>"Ne, Aoi-chan, can I borrow 500 yen?"
>TL Note: 500 yen is roughly $5 USD, or 42 Norwegian Krone

>"Okaa-san, can you not put green peppers in my bento?"
>TL Note: Okaa-san is how most adolescents address their mother; Bento is a common type of lunch box

Scanlations of parody manga are pretty awful, too.
>"Who do you think I am, Son Goku or something?!?!!"
>TL Note: He is referring to Son Goku, protagonist of Akira Toriyama's bestselling manga, Dragon Ball. Son Goku is based on a character named Sun Wukong, from the Chinese tale "Journey to the West"
>>
>>143987368

>>143987678
So you have time to read big books, and time to watch anime, but no time to read 20-page chapters of the original manga versions of those anime that allow you to cover the same content in a fifth of the time?
>>
>>143987758
Posting here is one of my hobbies that I've been doing basically since the website's inception.

>>143987773
Literature is an actual thing you idiot
>>143987853
'big books' are a minority, but I them read on-and-off over roughly a year.
>>
>>143987654
I'm well aware of how awful fansubs were back in the 90s and early 2000s. But at least most anime fansubs were able move on from that.

Manga scanlations are still like that.

>>143987596
The problem isn't necessarily the TL notes, but the rampant problem they have with leaving Japanese words intact and explaining them separately, when an English equivalent already exists.

We don't need a separate TL note for "okaa-san." Just have the character address her as "mom."

Some TL notes are just incredibly condescending, too. Who doesn't know what a fucking bento is? And even then, you can call it a lunchbox and it wouldn't lose any meaning at all.

Scanlations wouldn't take nearly as long if these asshats would learn to be more efficient.
>>
I gave up on watching anime years ago. Manga is the superior option. Plus most of the best manga will never be animated or it ends up getting animated awfully and the manga reigns superior.
>>
>>143988010
>at least most anime fansubs were able move on from that
That's because fansubbing is dead. Almost all of the "fansubs" are just CR/Funi rips or edits.
>>
>>143988010
You say the problem isn't TL notes, but then you go on to complain about TL notes some more, so that's clearly the problem, and the solution is to just fucking ignore it. No one's disputing that they're dumb, I'm just saying that it really shouldn't make it "too hard" to read manga, because that's silly.

Also, I guarantee you that ten-word TL notes and not translating "okaa-san" and "onii-chan" are not slowing down anyone's translations that much, they're just cluttering up the page with shitty notes.
>>
>>143987975
>Literature is an actual thing you idiot
Not him, but I've never met anyone who referred to "reading literature" or the like unironically who wasn't a massive prick.
>>
>>143987853
>cover the same content in a fifth of the time
Oh look, it's this meme again.

Time saving should never be a selling point for entertainment.

You know what would save even more time? Not consuming any media at all. Don't watch anime, don't read books, don't play video games, don't watch movie, and don't read manga. There, you've maximized your productivity.
>>
The biggest reason for anime's superiority to manga is how the number of episodes for an anime show is decided in the beginning then the story is made to fit into it with a decent conclusion, whereas manga is written to stretch out the story as long as possible in order to keep the mangaka steadily employed. A lot of the extra story details in manga are superfluous bullshit. Adaptations trim the fat.
The way each business functions ensures anime will always be the ideal medium.

>>143988160
TL notes ARE a problem, but they AREN'T the problem alone.

Poor translation is also an eyesore. Some examples of poor translation coincidentally lead to more TL notes.

But I'm not bigoted. I also hate poor translations that don't have TL notes either.

>Ne, I like Chiharu-san, baka!

>>
>>143988499
>Poor translation is also an eyesore. Some examples of poor translation coincidentally lead to more TL notes.
Unless you want to eliminate honorifics or use "mom-san" or something else silly, then "okaa-san" without a note should be acceptable. Bento should also be acceptable, I'd say - yes, it's basically a lunchbox, but it's a rather specific version, and there's a reason it has wikipedia and dictionary entries of its own.
>>
>>143988644
Just translate "okaa-san" into "mom" or "mother" directly. Wow, that was so hard.
>>
>>143988745
>unless you want to eliminate honorifics
>>
>>143988811
In my opinion, using "okaa-san" at all in an English translation is unacceptable.

This isn't even about the honorifics debate. "Okaa-san" is a word that already has an acceptable English equivalent. This isn't an honorifics argument, so much as a translation argument.

If you want to add "san" or "kun" or whatever to the end of a person's name, I don't have a strong opinion on that. I know that some people prefer leaving them on, and some people prefer removing them. That's the translator's prerogative.

I prefer reading manga to watching anime.
>>
I'm far more interested in the type of visual storytelling that comes with television and film, in the form of framing, animation and montage. I wouldn't argue (as many anime > manga people in this thread have tried to) that anime is inherently superior to manga, only that it features the type of storytelling that I am more accustomed to and a style that I prefer. I think a simple preference is reason enough to watch anime rather than read manga. This preference is understandable considering the vast majority of people grew up watching cartoons, maybe even anime, airing on television, whereas only a slim minority read comics, even slimmer would be the number of people who grew up on manga. As a result the vast majority of people are more accustomed to the visual language of animation and television, but not so much comics or manga. It's the same way television isn't inherently superior to, say, opera. If I were raised on opera I might prefer it, however not knowing anything about its style and manner of storytelling I would be quite lost trying to pick it up now, and would never been fully accustomed to it no matter how many years I watched it as an adult. Arguably one could say the majority of people who say they prefer manga to anime are forcing it, as it would be inconceivable that they would prefer a style so foreign to them.

Also there is the whole other element of writing being a more central part of the manga. As highlighted with >>143987531, most unofficial translations for manga are trash, which is a shame because the text is more important to manga than the dialogue is to anime. A crappy translation for anime is nullified considering how much storytelling is done through visuals in television, whereas manga relies almost entirely on the text.

Let's see... there are literally color pages. Motion and action can be conveyed through manga since, you know, it's fucking pictures. Sound? It's really not hard to imagine them as you're reading; they even put sound effects in the manga if you're too retarded to hear it.
