For the time, it was the most realistic, believable realization of a pilotable robot that could be used in war. Every nuance in its design had a purpose besides the samurai-like appearance which was used for symbolism.
All these new ones are designed with cool, flashy aesthetics over practicality. It's one of the reasons why Gundam Seed was such garbage and why Fukuda is a monumental hack.
