I'm not sure,aside from how relife was released I guess the most experimental works now are stuff airing on the noitamina block or full cg shows like Sidonia,however that stuff is still playing safe and experimenting more on a technical level.
For some reason we don't really get OVAs for this anymore either, and when we do they're tie-ins for games,lns or franchises.
I kinda wish the OVA scene hadn't died,but on the bright side there's a chance for it to pop back up in the future.
The only obstacle I see to it is that the main consumers of anime which I will generalize as Otaku tend to stray towards certain types of shows so I don't really see a chance for OVAs to become a thing again right now.
Also just remembered but Trigger kinda does this still, although that's a big "kinda".
Fundraising an anime through KS was an interesting concept and could help revitalize the OVA scene of things go well,then there's you tibe with stuff like RWBY and short animations.

the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. No, Production I.G. did work on FLCL but had almost no high level or creative control of the show. All of the storyboarding and direction was done by Gainax.

Diebuster was excellent , but more when viewed as it's own thing rather than a straight up sequel. In fact it seems more like a sequel to FLCL , set in the Gunbuster universe. ( the Fraternity mentioned in FLCL are there for example)
If FLCL 2 turns out to be that sort of sequel, i wouldn't mind it.

Mahoro was an original manga though, it wasn't a gainax show and only had a gainax ending because the manga wasn't finished and the author let gainax be gianax.
For an original gainax show its very weak, I prefer TTGL, Gunbuster, Eva, Nadia, FLCL, PSG and pretty much everything else.
I felt a ton of diebuster wasn't up to the action or "hype" of the other series done by them.
