Of the 46 winning stories listed on the "Net Novel Prize" contest's website, 14 have "alternate world" directly in the title. The 1st place Grand Prix prize, which included publication of the story and 1,000,000 yen (about $9925.80 USD), was won by a story about traveling to an alternate world titled, "The Chronicle of the Male Virgin Who Travels to the Alternate World Chiirem [cheat + harem] and Gains Healing Magic."

Terrorism.
Japan hasn't had many of those, they'll fucking bend to the pressure.
>>143948244
Most of the top selling LNs don't even do that shit.
>>143947963
What exactly were you expecting from the so called 'Net Novel Prize' contest? If the novels were in any way good, it wouldn't have to resort to being sold on the net now, would it? Seriously, this is like complaining an award for 'Tumblr Novel Prize' has too much drama in it.
>>143949821
This. The fact that "The Chronicle of the Male Virgin Who Travels to the Alternate World Chiirem [cheat + harem] and Gains Healing Magic" won the fucking prize should tell you that this is a garbage contest.
>>143948296
>Chiirem [cheat + harem]
I hope to God that they always have to say Chiirem like that if it gets an anime.
With all these titles, I half expect the actual content of the WNs to have nothing to do with alternate worlds or harems.
>>143947963
Apparently two nukes weren't enough. What a cringefest.

I read something exactly like this except the MC was an older ugly dude. He did get healing magic and was working his way to a harem.
It was garbage no shit.
>>143951583
Kagerou Daze has a normal title and it's the second most popular LN after SAO.

I blame the overlord author, he encouraged everyone to go write their own self insert wn and hope to make it big.
And they did just that, in droves.
>>143949896
I really just want to sit all these authors down, place The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant in front of them, and see their eyes explode at the early point where he rapes the first chick who's nice to him.
Because that's not even a good fucking series, and it's better by leagues than all this crap. Pulls a lot fewer punches, too.
>>143947963
Didn't one of the contest's ban future isekai stories?

Kill yourself.
>>143953942

More like two/three a season
>>143954030
That would still only be like 5% of a season, but no, there aren't two/three a season. List all the ones in the three seasons of this year so far.
The fucking problem is not isekai itself
it's that fuckers almost never created any worthwhile or creative world. it's all fucking same races and culture you can pull from any generic RPG on the market.
Not to mention the mc also in many novel has a fucking game system to abuse with his special snowflake power. DUH EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT A GAME GOTTA ADD HP BAR AND SKILL TREES MATE.
And the characters, oh my gods all females are rather fucking cunts that dare to oppose our mc, or fucking useless sluts leaking fluid every time she smells some MC's breath (despite the fact that she was strong, smart, or queen or whatever before joining mc harem)
>>143954099
But can it get worse at this point?
>>143954030
What the fuck are you on about? There isn't a single one in Summer.
>>143952937
Y'know a few years ago after completely forgetting about it, I actually remembered MAR existed and was gonna read it, but never got around too it. I made a thread and pretty much everyone said it was ultimately forgettable and boring, but I might give it another try someday. I remember Jack, MC, and The Hammer were cool.
>>143954127
Should we try to come up with something worse?
>>143947963
>Chiirem [cheat + harem]

Now this is some impressive titling.3rd nuke when?
>>143954159
I honestly can't think of anything as boring and creative, but theres gotta be something. Maybe if really weird fetish shit suddenly got some sort of genre niche and boomed, not quite unlike Monster Girls, but thats not too bad.
>>143954179
From what I've heard apparently with SA:O, but I never watched it or payed real attention to how the genre evolved.
>>143954144

>>143954159
No need, Re: Monster takes that place already
And I used to think magical school battle harems were the worst.
Now instead, people have decided to ruin the fantasy genre, and you literally can't have one without insane harem horseshit.
>>143954208
>From what I've heard apparently with SA:O
Makes sense, I should have thought about it.
>>143954159
That's easy - BL.
>>143954211
I'm hoping you haven't watched/read Alderamin, because it isn't isekai in any way. It's just normal fucking fantasy - there is one world, every character is born in it and stays in it forever, that world is just different from the real one and has magic and shit.
>>143954179
Around last year was when we started getting anime adaptations so probably a bit earlier than that was when every middleschooler realized they could "just use the same fantasy setting that all the RPGs and other LNs use by using this one simple plot device!".
>>143954213
>And I used to think magical school battle harems were the worst.
Because you are a moron and probably new.
>Now instead, people have decided to ruin the fantasy genre, and you literally can't have one without insane harem horseshit.
They are ruining nothing. There is still fantasy out there and if they were not making these, they would not be making "good" fatnasy, they would be making whatever sells.
You just have to watch anime instead of complaining.
>>143954208
I think if you inserted really obnoxious eight grader political opinions into things then you'd really have something special.
>>143947963
>The Chronicle of the Male Virgin Who Travels to the Alternate World Chiirem [cheat + harem] and Gains Healing Magic
I'm not sure if I should laugh or be depressed.
How about a story of a guy getting transported to a fantasy world as a 7/10 girl with a slave collar that forces her to obey acting as some noble's aide on his adventures, who also uses her sexually and sells her out to people for extra cash
I get the appeal of isekai stories. It's a nice fantasy to imagine traveling to another world that is full of wonder and amazement. But enough is enough, alright.
When did it all go so wrong?
>>143954293
No that'd be on the hilarious end of the spectrum rather then just uninspired. I'd laugh my ass off if some Chuuni kid started raving about the benefits of communism incorrectly.
>>143954211

>>143954284
>Defending battle harems
They're both bad, we just happen to have more of Isekai at the moment. School setting battle harem in a contemporary fantasy setting is only slightly less lacking in terms of creativity, which it usually makes up for by cranking the garystu up a notch.
>>143954312
It's not enough, having different types of cute anime girls is the best thing.

My only good experiences with Isekai came around this very year. But both KonoSuba and Re: Zero are inspired by Isekai stories being bad. I like those shows, but I'd like to see an Isekai show that's good without needing to pick apart what's bad about other Isekai shows.

I didn't defend them, I said they weren't the worst.

wouldn't make sense. Old civilizations were redpilled because they understood what was needed to survive.
You'd have to create some sort of liberal world for redpilling to work
The problem is that battle harems and isekais are too easy to write.
>>143954586
True enough, but it's very easy to fall into the same cookie cutter trap that every isekai turns into. I'm sure that it's possible to have lots of isekais that are extremely interesting but if going with a loser harem mc that falls into a video game world still earns big bucks, why bother innovating?
I bet with a battle harem or isekai setting, everyone on /a/ should already be able to throw out the same half-baked story.
They're just too easy to use, like fast food; cheap, delicious and at some point everyone realises it's not healthy but continues eating the shit anyway.
The question is, is there a reverse?
Has there been a setting that somehow, everyone writes differently?
I know it's a really strange, specific idea to find such a setting but maybe reading this, some anon might realise something.
>Mc's harem has a furry in it.

>>143954742
When you've already got eight girls...
>>143947963
This is a web novel contest, though.
Majority of web novel authors if not all of them are people who got rejected from actual publishers and mainly third rate publishers later pick them up like AlphaPolis that buys up almost every web novel they can get their hands on these days and they are known to send DMCAs.
AlphaPolis also likes telling the author to shut down their web novel or remove all the chapters and just provide summary teasers instead.
You know something's wrong with the industry when KyoAni LN entries sound more interesting than any of the novels in this contest.

Not knowing what's going to happen is what makes things fun.

this is one of them
>>143955525
Isekai as used NOW means different world + game gimmicks. Isekai in itself implies no such thing and simply meant 'a different world'.
I will say, although its ultimately unofficial and personal, I find isekai stories that seem more /tg/ related end up being better then those that are just borrowing from JRPGs and shit. Konosuba seems very much like a tabletop game, for example. Dungeon Meshi is also another candidate. I dunno, maybe its just because they illicit a different take to fantasy worlds, but I think they generally are and preform much better then standard MMO shit.
>>143955630
Dungeon Meshi isn't isekai.

>>143957323
Non-fiction English books often have descriptions attached to the title. I heard that was becoming typical because it's optimized to show results on search engines. Someday we in the west will once again return to naming our fiction like "The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates."

Tell me anons, will we live to see true Shield-kino or Mushoku-kino within our lifetimes?
This is not a Japanese phenomenon.
I work in the editing industry in the USA. Female authors, especially romance and young adult, are suffering from the same.
Romance novels for women now are not what it they were in the 20th century. Those were full of actual main characters, think Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind.
Now it is the same shit as isekai. I get the same fucking queries every goddamn week.

>All the men flock to her pussy no matter how rude or wifey or tsundre or actually "strong" she is.
>basically a blank slate female MC for the reader to self-insert with while she fucks one-dimensional hunks.
>>143958707
>webnovel goes full edge.
I'm legit scared of this.
>>143958726
Note that not all female authors suffer from this. There are some wonderful manuscripts that never get published by the Big Four because it "might not" sell. And because the female authors don't hide their names like JK Rowling did for the first 2 Harry Potter books.

Because of these two I mentioned a list of CURRENT isekai that go against your narrow as fuck view of thousands of literary works.
>>143958675
SAO isn't even isekai retard.
Yeah every genre has a couple of retarded formulaic works looking to capitalize on the craze but if you consider that representative and not derivative then you're fucking dumb.
>>143958818
>SAO isn't even isekai
Well, looks like you ran out of options and have to go back to using old baits. Here's a (you) for (you)r effort.
>>143958875
So sports series are all Isekai? You play in an isolated area where no one outside can interfere, get to show off your niche skills that ordinary people would never develop because they have no need, and get streamed to everyone while trying to be a hero, what's the difference?
>>143947963
This is actually much, much worse than Irregulars at Magic Highschools and the early 2000's VN Adaptations/LuckyStar Clones with girls talking about things/Seasonal cat-centered shows. It has gone too far and needs to be stopped.
>>143951625
Atelier Tanaka? But I don't think he was working his way to a harem.
>>143958875
But it's quite literally not isekai. They're all very much alive in the real world which becomes a major focus after volume 1.
>>143958943
Oh, it's you again. Keep at it, you'll become the next kei-tai.
>>143954179
Mushoku Tensei was what sparked the boom. I think some other WNs/LNs like SAO set the foundations for it though.
>>143958875
Not him but SAO really isn't isekai....what the hell are you even talking about?
>>143958818
>>143958401
No anime adaptation, nobody gives a fuck. I'll tell you to keep being salty, but then again you hipsters like being salty and being angry that people don't know about the obscure shit you get smug about.

Is there a isekai where a female travels to another world and has a harem of princes?
Inyuasha was pretty good.
>>143959025
I don't want see what going happen if Mushoku gets a anime adaptation.
>>143959099
Yeah, probably. I'm pretty sure multiple versions of that exact scenario exist but I haven't read any of them.
>>143959086
Search the archive, the guy has been arguing about sports series being an isekai in previous threads.
>>143959047
I'm so fucking glad dude. I love that my absolute favorite of the genre is almost unadaptable because I'll never have to interact with the SAO/SnK audience.
>>143959099
That's the generic plot for basically every shoujo harem ever. Get started.
>>143958726
Isn't the majority of that industry nowadays self-published authors on amazon? I know the erotic novel e-book market is absolutely saturated with niche porn written by amateurs to make a quick buck.
>>143959206
>I'll never have to interact with the SAO/SnK audience.
Says the guy arguing with the SAO/SnK audience in this very thread. I swear, you faggots are just as retarded as the people you like to mock.
>>143959164
It's an adequate comparison, one which has never been countered, only shit posted.
>>143947963

Wish the last thread stayed up.

It's only going to get worse. No matter how bad things are, something even worse is going to come out that makes you rather have it back.

>>143959025
>Mushoku Tensei was what sparked the boom.
Really? I didn't think it was a big title. I really fucking hate what became of this series half way through. I'm still trying to get myself to read the final chapters.
>>143959164
No one is arguing that sports is isekai, it's to point out how retarded you are for considering SAO an isekai. You could literally take some random sports manga where the MC gets stranded on a deserted island and has to play sports to survive and that would be no different than SAO.

>>143959037
It's largely it in spirit, though I'd agree, as terrible as it is, it's not quite as cancerous as full blown isekai.
It just hits the most cancerous check boxes: has super nerdy skill that, in this new world, makes him an awesome god and he gets tons of girls falling over his dick. Which is all anyone really cares about when it comes to shitting on isekai. They could all be time travel themed, and people would still hate them. The being "trapped in another world" part is largely ancillary to their problems.
None of this is anything new, anyway. Isekai only gets singled out nowadays because it's become so absurdly checklist it's hard not to notice them all.
>>143959299
I believe it topped syosetu's rankings for quite a while. It was big enough at least among the LN/WN communities.
>>143959309

Seriously, you guy, seriously.
Is there like a list of all the "Isekai" novels?
I torrented like a hundred novels and most of what I end up checking are those. I want to avoid them if possible.
How could they completly fuck up a concept that was perfected twenty years ago?
>>143959359
Worse.
>>143955630
Because real JRPGs are heavily plot focused.
Once you take the heavy plot away, strip off any supporting cast and focus entirely on the MC, add cheats so that your MC becomes a superhero snowflake, what you get is:Skyrim with sex mods
>>143959354
The lack of self awareness is indeed ironically hilarious.
Has there been an Isekai story where they have to take a flaw instead of a cheat?
What's wrong with writing about male virgins?
Hits too close home? Self-hate?

>>143959215
Yes, the self insert romance and erotica is extremely pervasive in the big companies and the self-published. I guess Water for Elephants did break standards in every way, being both self published but not self insert, but those are one in a million.
I don't know why the sudden obsession for self insert came to be. This is happening in high fantasy novels written by men too.
It isn't necessarily a Millennial thing either. I don't know why the popularity has skyrocketed.
Or maybe it has always been that way.

Maybe it was another of those WNs/LNs that set the foundations, but it doesn't strike me as what caused the isekai boom.
>>143959423
Kono Suba.
>>143959423
Tilea's Worries.
MC became a girl who has an extreme elf fetish but the female elf he likes isn't lesbian so he got friendzoned and can no never go past first base.
He has to settle for just smelling the elf girl's hair.
Also, in Tilea's Worries, MC accidentally makes the Bad Guys defeat the Good Guys and a shitload of innocent people actually die and we, readers, have to accept innocent people or the heroes on the human's side dying because MC accidentally fought on the bad guy's side.
>>143959423
yeah, there's quite a few that have the character end with a "flaw" or "weak" ability... at least, thats what the people in their world thinks.
then the MC finds some ingenious way to use it or discovers hidden/secret abilities, that he ends up being overpowered anyway.
>>143959099
There's one where a male travels to an alternate world and has a harem of princes so I'm sure the female version exists too.
This gives you a lot of insight into their lives. They must be so fucking terrible that the majority of their media is about escaping into an alternate reality.
>>143959655
>Or maybe it has always been that way.
How so? I look back at science fiction and fantasy novels published 30+ years ago and I can't remember any characters that were obviously blank for self-inserts. Even in the alternative world stories.
>>143959697
Just because it hangs a lampshade on shitty isekai trope doesn't excuse it for including them. He's still a reborn otaku who succeeds beyond any reasonable amount thanks to his previous knowledge surrounded by women who want him.

But it's isekai for grills so they don't need special powers or RPG shit, just pretty boys and pretty clothes and drama llamas.
Also, Twelve Kingdoms.
>>143959787
well self-insert main characters are of course as old as novels themselves its just that they were usually either idealized heroes or a critical self-reflection of the author.
>No Isekai about a group of people in their mid 20s who all have different majors and end up being reincarnated together in a poor as fuck village.
Innovating a bit would be nice instead of always being a NEET or something akin to it.
>>143959739
alright you know one that does it straight, but thats less of a flaw and more of just MC being unlucky.
im talking about MCs who get told that the power they get are "shit", and then they find some loophole to abuse it or discover more abilities from their power that now makes them "OP".
>>143959787
Are you saying Arslan's party isn't made up of self-inserts? Or that faggot Yang Wenli wannabe in Tytania?

I noted in the preceding paragraph that the popularity has skyrocketed. I don't know if those kinds of novels were always submitted but weren't monemakers til now. I've only been on the cursory part of the industry for 3 years.
The fact I'm referring to it as industry makes me depressed.
