Whis has asked vegeta to become the next God of destruction.This would mean to destroy Beerus in the process.

I never thought too deeply about these sort of details. Not to mention when Vegeta asked who Whis was, he simply replied with "I am a Whis" after thinking for a response.
Not to mention that he interferred during the fight with Goku and Frieza using his time powers for unknown reasons, and he knows it's against the rules to do so.
