I figured about the same. He'd probably be able to take on someone like the count or the baron from the early chapters, who were purely brute strength and massive frames. Against someone like Rosine he'd probably struggle or outright die. Anything above that is Guts-only territory, though I'd be surprised if by some cunning trick he somehow managed to push one of Griffith's generals into a disadvantageous position.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Keep in mind that Guts is experienced and always prepared for apostle fights. There's a reason his sword is so huge - anything less would barely hurt an apostle.
Considering how apostles can survive having their guts cut out, taking a cannon to the chest, or even having their neck pierced by a knife, I doubt Serpico could harm them in any significant way with his rapier and feather sword.
Sure he's pretty strong, but just not specialised enough to be fighting something like that.

A sword through the neck, then a knife stab in the heart, then a knife stab right in the eye? Any of thee would kill any normal living thing. And he still had the strength to kill some guards and crawl to the camp to capture Griffith, he was only really killed by Zodd.
The snake baron was shot with a cannon, then cut in half, then shot in the face multiple times with the crossbow, and still only died because a building on fire fell on him, and he was left to burn alive.
The count also got shot by the cannon, and literally got his head cut off, and then stabbed multiple times.
Rosine got shot by the cannon, cut almost in half by the sword, then pierced by the sword, and still had the strength to fly.
There's just no way Serpico could do enough damage to be any problem to an apostle. At least not with his weaponary.

Yeah that's what I mean, Zodd kills him but he is envisioning the hell void because he is already dying. He's pretty damaged but the count, baron and Rosine suffered damage that was comparable to Wyald being torn up by Zodd. Besides that decapitation seems yo do the trick for most apostles, the count lived through it because of his ability. If Serpico used the sword of the sylph on the baron to decapitate him I think it'd be over.

I am so sad that we will never see the count arc and lost children animated. People say that the early chapters are bad and edgy, but imo, those chapters are really important for guts's character development. His redemption and him slowly becoming more human is so much more meaningful if we see him in his lowest point. Once he was ready to kill/use innocents as meat shields, he hated weak people, he trusted nobody and he was basically a madman fuled by hate and the desire for revenge. Sometimes he was even more destructive than the apostles. Now he has started to trust people again, and acts as a wise mentor/ father figure for his team, He is willing to use the lethal berserker armor, to protect his new friends, he has regained a sense of humor and he no longer fights for revenge, Now he fights for love.
Skipping the black swordsman arc takes away all that development. Instead of being the most broken man who still managed to get back on his feet, he now goes from a somewhat angry and very atheistic swordsman, to a slightly better person.

What the hell is griffiths endgame?
Let's take a quick look at everything he has done.
He became a god hand member.
Then got a real body in the real world.
After that he became a hero and defeated the Kushan invaders.
While doing that he merged the astral world and the normal world, making the normal world uninhabitable.
He also created the only place where humans can be safe, and right now, all of humanity is forced to go there.
What is his plan? Does he intend to sacrifice all of those humans? There won't be another eclipse for a few hundred years. Also, what would he ask for? He can't ask for more power or something like that, because the other God hand members might not agree with his desires. Also, he does not care about anybody, how can he sacrifice the people, if he has no connection to them?
My theory is that he know that guts will come to his city, and he needs that to happen. Maybe guts's presence will help him being forth a new eclipse.
Guts is the Void to Griffith's Gaiseric is what seems to be a popular theory. Falconia gets sacrificed, the cycle completes and restarts. Welcome to Dark Souls.

Also, the problem is that the anime really lacks the eerie, more brutal feel of the manga. Pic related (from the 2008 pilot) was also made with CGI but the way Guts' swing was done adds impact. Guts's swings in the new anime just lacks Guts's ferocity in battle.

The 3D character models look fucking awful, with so little detail on them that it should be illegal. The contrast between 2D closeups and 3D anything hurts every time it happens.
The animation is lazy, under-animated, and looks like it was done by some no-name video game company in the dreamcast era. Everybody either looks like they're shifting between a bunch of set poses, or they hardly move at all, making me wonder why they couldn't have just drawn that part.
Guts's face and hair in particular is a fucking page 1 rewrite, and not anything close as to what should be expected of anything in 2016. Especially his face. It looks strange in every shot.
And being 3D, you would think they would try to take advantage of camera angles and character movement that would be extremely hard to do, but aside from a couple 360 degree camera pans here and there, it's just standard anime cinematography.

I just finished the manga for the first time. Did something happen to Miura around the time Schierke was introduced? It just seemed to get kind of "generic fantasy" around that point. I just think the way she overexplains everything takes away from it, among other things. Guts' behavior became very predictable too.

I'm reading the manga for the first time and just made it to chapter 200.
I'm getting a Vatican vibe. They talk about the Holy City as its own thing (like Vatican). Like the Crusades, the See (read as papacy if referring to reality) extends its influence beyond normal country borders. In the last couple of chapters where Farnese and Serpico join the Guts' Hanse they talk about Holy lands where the Holy See set up camp and authority. Or extend their authority to nobility like Farnese's father.
I'm elated and ashamed I never got around to the manga until now.

This episode was way better so I'm anticipating the next one cautiously. The CG didn't look quite as jarring all the time though it still did in places. Farnese was as a total qt as expected. It was also just plain nice to see something that wasn't Golden Age for the first time in a while.
