Sadly, this'd probably create shitstorms as well. That is because, as I saw in Fakku (where vanilla is a tag) before the Pandapocalypse, some clearly vanilla galleries didn't have the tag; either due to the tagger forgetting/missing it, or not considering it vanilla for whatever reason.
In short, vanilla will NEVER EVER be a tag, and the only way to find new material is to follow artists and translators that do vanilla stuff.

The thing is that I'd rather have works be over-tagged (false positives) than under-tagged (false negatives).
It's a lot harder to search through the list of all works for false negatives than to search through the list of tagged works for true positives.
This is especially true for the more niche tags, which still have the issue where some high-power taggers veto the tag when it's arguably applicable.
Categorized favorites is a band-aid for this, allowing people to define their own tags in the form of favorite categories. This still has the limitations of user-defined tags, such as losing the ability to crowd-source tagging (e.g. by having favorites "follow" public tags). They also have other artificial limitations, like being limited to 10 categories in total and having only one category per work.
