What is it about 90s anime/japan before the recession that made it perfect? Every time I see videos of 90s Japan or watch 90s anime, I close my eyes and pray that I could be reincarnated back in time as a Japanese student in the 90s.

Not really. Japanese people aren't particularly happy (there's a happiness rank by country, Japan ranks low). Life revolves around work to an autistic degree, and obligations to your family, boss, and society really shape your whole future and outlook. As much as I like anime and I do want to learn Japanese, I'm pretty glad I was born in America with chill parents.

90s is cool, but I feel more that way about the 80s than anything. Pseudo-nostalgia for an era I never even experienced. The 90s is more like a tangent of the 80s that doesn't quite have the same magic. Early 00s holds a special place too as some kind of calm before a storm of incredibly mediocre but charming anime.
