Yuri manga ain't ever been afraid to take popular characters or storylines from franchises that are in vogue, and adapt it to their own end. It's not like that's a unique thing. Look at all the Rei Ayanami clones in so many series.
Even when people were getting bored of just making Marmite but gayer back when Dubya was just starting his second term, they were taking flavor of the season stuff and making lesbians out of them. Flat chested, long-haired tsunderes and all that.
But how come you never see something like one of those generic LN stories about some overpowered faggot in an MMO(or a fantasy world that still inexplicably uses RPG mechanics because LN writers are fanfiction writers with a salary) or at a superpower school or something, but with yuri instead of your usual potboiler self-insert?
It's not like MMORPG yuri(though they often just play the game, they're not trapped in it) or magical school yuri doesn't exist, it's just they're not really trapped in arrested development with the worst excesses of the genre. Hell, most of the time when you have a yuri setting where everybody at the school is a warrior with some kind of special ability or power, MC's is actually unambiguously pretty good or is seems mundane at first glance but its wielder is almost Jojo-tier in how adept they are at creative applications of it.
Maybe it's just because there's really not an appetite for deranged escapism.
