Goku Black, who looks just like Son Goku and who menaces future Earth, appeared in the present via time distortions. Right before Black was pulled back to the future by the closing time distortions, he destroys the time machine which Future Trunks rode in. However, the Bulma of the present had saved the time machine Cell rode inside a capsule. Goku and the gang resolve to repair that time machine and go to the future in pursuit of Black.

Bulma hurries to repair the time machine and comprehend its energy. Meanwhile, the Trunks from the future goes to meet Gohan, who had been his master in the world of the future. However, Trunks is bewildered to find that the Gohan who shows up is completely different than the one he knew.

Remember, there's no evidence that the character development he had in the Super version of RoF and the training stuff with Gohan and Piccolo had anything to do with Toriyama - especially when you read Toriyama's and Toyotaro's interview and they talk about Gohan. They seemed to consider his story finished.
So, if this encounter is actually from Toriyama's outline, it likely won't lead anywhere for Gohan. Trunks will see that he's different and then leave him alone. Toei might add some references to him going back to training, but it'll be irrelevant and he won't have any active role in the arc.
So, this is going to be a snore fest till at least ep 54.

You're either very naive or hopeful to think that this show is going to do anything other than Goku and Vegeta Battle Buddies Power Hour.
Gohan went from a pretty important character in the series (even though he wasn't the strongest)
Two of my favorite moments in the series are when Gohan fights Vegeta, because events have chased Vegeta down to a point where Gohan can even lay a finger on him, and Gohan's first REAL fight in the series is against a foe not even his dad can stand up to, and him fight. And secondly, when Future Gohan fights and loses against the Androids, because he fully believes that Trunks will save the future in his stead.
I don't care if Gohan's not the strongest, I 'just want him to be able to do SOMETHING. Instead, the series looked at him, and decided that Vegeta needs more screentime, so Gohan gets to be a shittier along with everyone else. Not even filler episodes can escape Goku/Vegeta antics.
Between that and all the shitposting about the "Church of Gohan", I feel like I made a long bet on a series and I've lost just by watching.
I'd at least be happy if he was being replaced by someone on the roster, but no, not even that.

The summary only mentions Goku, Whis and Beerus, no Vegeta or anyone else. I thought they'd get rid of Goku for a while by locking him in the future, but it looks more like now that might be the way they'll keep him away before he can arrive to get the final battle.

Only way I could see Gohan actually getting back in the game is if somebody decided to mess with his comfy family life. The entire series has shown us that Gohan is only properly motivated to fight to protect or avenge the people around him.
I doubt it would ever happen, but I can't even imagine what kind of reaction it would invoke in him if after all these years of having finally achieved the life he always wanted, somebody showed up on his doorstep and took it all away from him.

The only thing the manga suffers from is the fact that it's a monthly so it feels extremely rushed to keep up with the anime.

Even if sad Trunks was somehow enough to motivate Gohan to join the fray, he'd likely just be useless fodder without a stronger motivation to fight.
He'd still be reluctant to do anything that puts his life in serious danger knowing there's a family back home that needs him. Unless you change up that equation, his heart just probably wouldn't be in to it.
