Part 1 :- My introduction to King Arthur (Saber) was in Fate Zero and to be honest she was probably the best part of the show. I thought that the fact that she was portrayed as female was clever as the legend of King Arthur is a legend first and foremost and therefore the details being diluted and lost as the story gets retold throughout is quite interesting and a female King Arthur is a fresh spin on the legend.
However where this shit went down the drain for me was when I watched the anime adaptation for FSN by studio DEEN (and yes I even saw that miserable excuse for an UBW movie which was just a set of action set pieces glued together). The character of Arthur in the adaptation of the fate route was your typical run of the mill kuudere who has little to no relevance other than to put up with Shiro and later become a generic love interest for him.
It was even worse in the UBW anime as she gets reduced to caster's lesbian torture rape buddy Then I read the visual novel and it clicked. The reason that Arthur was gender swapped was so that she becomes a viable option for Shiro to bang which was crucial because it was a visual novel.
I mean during the development stages of Fate Stay/Night Type Moon was originally going to make it a novel series along the same veins as Garden of Sinners however there was a change of plans and they decided to make it a visual novel and for this they needed to have sex scenes if they were going to sell copies therefore saber was gender swapped. Originally saber was supposed to male like the more commonly known King Arthur in fact a part of this early concept can still be seen in Fate/Prototype.

Part 2:- To be honest compared to Fate/Zero, Fate Stay/Night is bad as in embarrassingly bad. Not only does it have a protagonist who has his head so far up his own ass that he is pretty much a red haired popsicle it also makes one of my favorite characters from Fate/Zero into a lifeless plot device half the time. (also yes the version of Shiro from the visual novel is also a train wreck of a character just like the ones from the show albeit a slightly more fleshed out train wreck )
PS:- I mean what can they do next make an alternate version of saber who looks almost exactly like the one from FSN but is based on a Roman emperor who beat his pregnant wife to death?
