It had everything going for it and they completely shit on it because Ono is a lazy ass. Proper character development? important character relationships? well paced plot? It's the second half of 5D's all over again, go only knows how much fucking around we did with the WRGP arc, shitty character of the day episodes and the Ghosts before we finally got a legitimate plot duel to deal with placido. Everybody became a fucking parody of themselves and so one note you can describe them all in less then 10 words. The worst part is they have people on staff who wrote the worst parts of GX and Zexal making it an unholy fusion of pure dragged out crap and the duel choreographer obviously isn't used to having so many options that a character can half now with all the summoning methods being used. Odd Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Enlightenment Paladin and Nirvana High Paladin all feel like cards Yuya has out of obligation to the plot rather than stuff he can use naturally. The only monsters he really has been able to use like that are his 3 fucking fusion monsters all of them are the easiest monsters he can make along with yuto's Dark Rebellion while he has to jump through hoops to make.

You know what, I think I may have been too harsh on Zexal. I think it actually did treat it's characters better over time. I started thinking about the early part of Arc-V and all those fun characters who we don't see ever again and even the Lancers are rarely in one place (in fact they haven't been since they were first assembled). I mean, even if they really didn't do the best with those characters at all, Zexal's characters all had their role in the show and they generally remembered who everybody in the side cast was. (the exception being Anna)
Hell, I think Zexal even treated Yuma's rivals better than Arc-V is doing right now. Reiji is literally who tier and let's not even get into the one-off side bosses like Sergey and Edo.
In terms of something I recognize to compare it to, I used to think going from Zexal to Arc-V was like going from Kamen Rider Wizard to Gaim, but now I think it's more like going from Den-O to Kiva.

You need to note that HEROES are one of Kaz's favourite types of cards hence why GX was full of them and they still see play and get support to this day.
Cyber Dragons are basically mecha Blue-eyes.dek and were famous for the OTKs yet Ryo barely got any relevance in GX when compared to Manjoume who was a mess of bad decks.
Then came 5ds with Blackwings which were not only popular but were able to win worlds and top several tournaments and this was what made Crow replace Aki since sex cults were costing money and crazy girls and romance subplots don't make as much as competitive trading cards so Konami took the easy route.
The same with Infernities, they looped forever and Kiryu got his own filler arc.
Then Zexal had Trains and Hands yet that emperor and Anna are barely relevant.

Zexal to Arc-V is like Fourze to Wizard or Ryuki to Faiz. The formers has slow starts that kicked into gear around half way in. The latters started off incredibly strong only to fall into complete mediocrity by the half way mark.

The arclight plot was the only well handled plot in the show and arguably the first half was far stronger because of it + because of the fact that Yuma, while retarded, had a distinct personality which made him far more likable than the friendship speech bullshit he pulls constantly in zexal II
The barian invasion was a fucking mess of a "war" that didn't really delve into either side outside of shark's couple episode reflection regarding that one time he ruled over a bunch of no name people in a nondescript kingdom. Half of the barians were complete wastes of time. Shark's change into a barian was comically rushed when they had all the time in the world to foreshadow it or build to it in the 40 eps since the arc began
Girag made the first 10 eps fucking miserable. The barian fetch quest after vector was dull and completely killed the momentum that came before and felt like a huge stall tactic while the writers abruptly decided to figure out where to go next. Dong thousand was the worst villain in the franchise, even worse than fucking darkness. They hype up the barians for an ep or two at the start of the arc, and then the barians fuck around for 40 eps before they remember "oh, we're the villains" and slaughter the whole supporting cast in like 5 eps.
It's a fucking mess of an arc that's only remotely saved by Nasch, the Arclights, and Vector.

The eps before the hotel shit were pretty damn good; slow compared to what we were used to from BR, but they provided a nice comfy adventure into Synchro and did a good job at using the Lancers as a team and at the very least, the show picked up again from Shun/Dennis onwards and did a pretty good job of keeping things interesting until we entered XYZ.

Why isn't anyone excited for Rin actually appearing? The pirate episode was a must-have because there needed to be at least 1 GX reference episode with Yuya in Fusion. Kachidoki coming back was certainly more interesting than Barrett. The guardians of the towers sounds interesting. The only thing I'm pissed about is Kaito saving Ruri instead of Shun or Yuto. But Dennis vs. Kaito makes sense so Kaito can shill his new Galaxy-Eyes and BTFO the faggot who betrayed and brought ruin to Heartland. Jobbing is only bad when a character is said acknowledged to be good but loses because of plot. Like Sawatari for example has shown on multiple occasions he is a competent duelist with his dueling strategies and foresight. He comes close to beating Yuya and Yugo in a duel but loses because of plot. Thus he jobs. If a character sucks at dueling and they lose it's not really jobbing so long as there is some effort to improve like what Yuma tried to do.

It would've been better if they were depicted as more human with having a specific reason for doing what they did. Real wars don't have a good and evil force fighting, it's just two sides that want different things. What does Academia want?
