Suppose you consider nationality to be part of your identity. You are only of a certain nationality insofar as you believe that you are of that nationality, and that the relevant authorities believe/accept that you are of that nationality. This is mutable. But your body is not.
Aside from your body, your personality (and by relation, your values and memories) is probably one other immutable marker of identity. But think about it. If one day you woke up and you were a girl (assuming you were male before), or if you woke up and you were black/Hispanic/Asian/Slavic/Caucasian, you would likely come to identify with other such people more, and your personality and values will change accordingly.
It makes sense for the girls to be shocked about where their souls were. But even as that divided them from normal humans, it should also unite them.

There's also the whole concept of bodily autonomy, that you dictate what is done with your body. By default, you have to sign up to be an organ donor, even though you're dead and will no longer need your organs anyways. Although "zombie" is technically not the correct term, the fact is that having your consciousness unknowingly torn out of you and placed in a gem, reducing your physical body to a corpse animated by magic, is kind of disturbing.
