I think I'm starting to get the main quality that attracted the bros to Noctis: his perceptive and broadminded acceptance. Squall was legitimately a professional soldier, true, but Zidane's thieving skills should be worth jackshit when fighting Beatrix and anybody with actual strength and power. Tidus could barely lift a sword at the beginning of the game and yet ended up fighting as well as Auron for some inexplicable reason. At the very beginning for example, you can catch a scene with Squall chilling with Seifer's posse and Raijin even offers to buy him something. Then they gang up on Zell together.
