Let's take a look at Naruto's Nagato's Invasion arc. At the end it gets all preachy about the cycle of hatred. When in reality, the ideas are nothing new. If anything they are irritatingly simplistic. Yet the anime places so much value on the novelty of these ideas of how it's the most profound thing in the world. That's pretentious- a complete overestimation of the philosophy a show expresses.

It's a really great science fiction anime that was self aware of the cultural changes from technology at the time (late 1990s saw a growth of internet users between 20-50% percent and the wired is an obvious parallel to this technology). Furthermore I very much enjoyed the references the show had such as Knights of Eastern Calculus referencing a fictional hacker group in MIT. But the my favorite, and the most important one was at the last episode when Lain's "father" spoke to her about drinking tea and eating madeleines. That was not without purpose. It's a clear reference to Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time in which the taste madeleine represents the involuntary memory. Interesting event of involuntary memory was with Lain's only friend, who, upon seeing Lain, recalled that she knew this person somehow.
