at first i was all for mumei but as the story progressed Ayame really turned out to the better girl
>>
>>143759670
By which you mean she's literally 12 and perfect, right?
>>
>>143759751
I liked Ayame, but she was too perfect. One of the most interesting things for me was watching Mumei being a super overconfident fighting genius but also a flawed child just looking for some love and acceptance.
>>
>>143760226
>but she was too perfect
But she wasn't.

She was weak since the beginning, and fucked up a lot a few times.

She's the reason everybody in the capital died too.

Making that hard decision and putting that blood on her hands is what really shows her strength of character
>>
>>143761197
Yes.
>>
>>143761138
biba was contrived, his whole reasoning for doing what he did was just having a tantrum basically. In the last episode it seemed like they didn't even know what they wanted to do with him or how to make his actions meaningful to the story
>>
>>143761375
but why? I felt that ikoma dying to accomplish his goals would have been more impactful than "everyone gets a good end"
>>
>>143761197
It's spelled out in the ending.
>>
>>143761448
Well, no. His hated of cowardice and weakness certainly originated with his father, yeah, but in the end it was more of a general philosophy than a specific vendetta against him. The shogunate would have had to be overthrown regardless because Biba saw it as the figure head of everything he wanted to get rid of.
>In the last episode it seemed like they didn't even know what they wanted to do with him
I thought it was alright. Biba realised that Ikoma embodied everything he valued in humanity (fearless, selfless), while he himself couldn't overcome his cowardice in the end (like he says in that quote). Biba figure that if he, a coward, could defeat Ikoma, a fearless person, that it would derail his entire worldview, so he couldn't accept that. He gets all angry and gives him the white blood in an attempt to get him up and fighting again to prove that he'd win, which is why he was saying shit to the tune of "I'm still standing, how is that possible?" You could probably also assume that Biba wanted Ikoma to live on because he was the future of his ideals in his mind.
>>
>>143758203
Thank you based WIT. I knew Biba was going to get rekt but also worried for the possible death of best MC IkoMAN, so Im glad everything worked out in the end.

S2 in Spring 2018, hopefully.

Half the show was about Ikoma redeeming himself by saving Mumei and feeding her that sweet rice. If he just died for the sake of "impact" it'd ruin that whole thing.

>>143762068
Yes he wouldn't be able to fill mumei with rice but the fact that he died to save her could have finally made her grow as a person

Not him, but Ikoma's death would have added gravity to how seriously he was committed to Mumei - he would sacrifice his life just to give her a chance (not even a guarantee) at a brighter future, just because it was the only way to give her non-zero odds.
>>
>>143762150
The Kabaneri wiki says 12, but in her flashbacks she's able to wield a blade and kill a man. Her proportions are all wrong for a 2 year old and a 2 year old shouldn't be able to pick up and wield a sword like that. Really she should be closer 16 for those flashbacks to make sense.

What was contrived was how retarded everyone had to be to let his plans succeed, the capital got fucking word of his attack, why the hell didn't the shogun order to sabotage the train tracks Biba had to take to reach them instead of sitting by knowing the guy has a giant black smoke monster that can tear down walls. It was just fucking stupid, a fearful man such as Biba's father doesn't just sit idly by knowing that.

I could have forgiven more of this show's faults if not for the shit pacing.
>Bring Takumi to limelight just to kill him for nothing more than shock value instead of giving him a more important role through the series
>Sukari's "betrayal" is overturned the same episode, instead of giving us time to actually hate him for it

Should have had a lot more of Suzuki as well.

He had a fair amount of screentime and bromancing with Ikoma though.
>fucking white blood pulled out right at the start of episode so there's no tension on whether or not Ikoma will survive
I think they decided that the reveal would come in the form of how Ikoma would live rather than if he would, and it did end up being fairly surprising.

>>143764628

You are a man of exceptional taste, my friend.

>>143761138

He was actually a good enough villain. He was pretty decent as just another repetition of the manipulative sociopath archetype, but although I think he could have stood to have a little more blatant breakdown and emptiness at the whole affair in the last episode (I don't think they should have kept highlights in his eyes at any point after he killed the shogun), overall everything he was really about showed through.

He's not like a fucking mind-blowing masterpiece or anything - Kabaneri isn't the most intellectual show - but he was definitely a solid dunk shot, especially when he's delivered so succinctly.
>>
>>143768864
>delivered so succinctly.
That sums up my opinion on the whole show, really. Nothing every bogged it down too much and everything was in service of a fun, satisfying ride with some nice characterization to boot. It triggers me deeply when people shit on it.
>>
>>143761197

I had to go back and watch it, myself. He actually shot Ikoma with the white serum after Mumei had woken up during the end of the fight. I don't think it was the most elegant way they could have done it (I think they should have sneaked it in when he was creeping up on a senseless Ikoma), especially since it wasn't demonstrated the vials could be used as bullets, but it happened, at least.

He wanted to kill him and used the white blood to weaken Ikoma, as the habanero max burst was too much for him to handle. Ironically that was what ended up saving him.

I agree completely about it being succinct and satisfying overall. If there's one thing Kabaneri can pride itself on above all other things, it's polish. Its animation is good - Wit is delivering. Its pacing is good - Wit is trying to escape the pitfalls of SnK. Its style is good - the art of Mikimoto and the motion of Wit are blended well. Its plot was relatively simple by necessity so that it could deliver on what it promised - lots of action, thrills, willpower and guts.

In this, the plot's pacing, one can clearly see Kabaneri's advantages and disadvantages to Shingeki no Kyoujin, its obvious basis for comparison - SnK had pacing issues arise in the transition from manga to anime (which are arguably present in the manga anyway), but they were more or less necessary to deliver its more intricate story; Kabaneri has no need to adhere to source material and does everything it can to deliver its narrative in the time allotted using every manner of cue it can muster. And damn does it use its time well. I would go as far as to say this is its strongest quality. Its timing on information delivery is generally quite spot on.

There are a couple weird things - the fucking Nue force blasts, for example (couldn't they have just been some sort of sonic resonance thing? would have been more sci-fi-esque), but the only thing they could have done more with was the actual origins of the kabane virus. Perhaps that will be the subject of a sequel, if this show is ever graced with one. It honestly doesn't need it and would be good just being laid to rest, but who knows?
>>
>>143769549
I agree completely with everything you said there, but in terms of the origins of the kabane virus I'm not sure I really care all that much. It's sort of like caring how the time loop in groundhog day started, if you get what I mean; did we really need to know? So I'm happy they just left it and we weren't bogged down with meme science exposition. It should almost definitely be included in the second season if it happens, though.
>>
>>143769483
>comfy and probably lewd SoL episode like ep 7 but with more budget

I want Wit to deliver
>>
>>143769673

Yeah, I definitely get what you mean. I thought as much as well, which is why I'm fine with the show just ending as the neat little escapade that it is. The kabane were a plot device to serve as a foundation for the setting, the action, and what drives the characters above all else.

And honestly, although it's -possibly- a genocidal weapon of war, at this point I figure the kabane virus is some sort of magical curse shit that nature or kami or the Earth coughed up to fuck over everybody. The kabane only started appearing after the (pollution creating?) industrial revolution and the Nue had fucking bizarre qi powers and shit, neh? Well, whatever - you're right at the end of the day, it's not a big deal. If a second season never comes, which would be just as well so there's no chance for the series to get fucked up, then whatever the explanation is will probably come in the design works or something.
