It's funny.

Inoue is so good at so many things.

Then he tries to draw a fight scene and you realize that Samura makes him look like a child.

If Samura bothered to put half as much work into his manga as he did into his torture porn, there wouldn't even be an argument.

>I think the actual book Musashi is the better read so far as that story goes.
Wow, someone else has this same view as me.

Musashi in Vagabond, although very humane, is nothing like the real Musashi either. If you read the book of seven rings, you can tell that Musashi was a very pragmatic man, who won because he only trained endlessly and use every possible way to win. His famous double sword is a literal representation of his philosophy.
>why have one small sword that you don't use hidden the entire fight? Use everything at your disposal

Like, he went to fight some legendary fighter called the Monster of the East, or something, (it's the deaf guy in Vagabond) who had a long sword and waited an hour for Musashi to come. Musashi came late with nothing but a wooden stick and beat his to death.
Musashi, in his book, talks about not making fancy dances or other shit, just focus on being the best and quickest while sharpening your skills.

In the manga, you get nothing of that feeling. He's just humane and that's all there is to him.
Boring.

it's hyper realistic in terms of a manga/comic.
You're being a tard for not realizing that.

"HUURR DURRR DOESN'T LOOK VERY REALISTIC TO ME"

The reason it doesn't reach hyper-realistic levels you'd see in drawings or paintings is because it's not one image, the mangaka has to draw pages upon pages of this stuff.

You've got to view it in a manga setting.
Innocent is by far the most realistic it has ever gotten in a manga.

Doesn't he use photos to make his backgrounds, textures etc rather than just drawing them? In which case it's about as realistic as black and white art can get. And if not, he's just crazy skilled.

But what I love most about Innocent is how he mixes in unrealistic/fantasy elements too for the sake of symbolism, it looks great. I like it a lot more than KnH, which was so dark it was sometimes difficult to see the details clearly.

Then you should have qualified it in the first place by saying "[...] for a comic". I'm more than aware of the limitations of having a deadline for art, my man. Anyway, the image you posted (and the manga in general) exagerates lighting very heavily to make use of the natural qualities of black & white contrast. This by itself is enough to differentiate it from art attempting to be realistic by instead trying to be larger-than-life, more dramatized. The proportions and stylization of anatomical details and such IS relatively realistic (excluding the lips) relative to most other comics, I'll give you that.

You should probably not go mouthing off at me for making a mistake that you yourself made. Also stop strawmanning people's arguments by typing it in caps with a bunch of HURRRs as if they're a loud autist, since again, it makes you look like a 'tard.

>>143728891
There's videos on youtube (I can't find them now) that show either him or an assistant of his drawing a background. They just used 3d assets and drew over them. They might use photos as well, I don't know, but I'd assume it's a similar case as with Asano where he's using them to reach higher levels of detail rather than as a lazy shortcut.
>>
>>143729134
>Also stop strawmanning people's arguments by typing it in caps with a bunch of HURRRs as if they're a loud autist, since again, it makes you look like a 'tard.

Let me gues. You saw people shit on the new movie, so you throught everyone hates Berserk? That7s the contrary. Everyone is angry because this manga deserved the best Japan can do. But Vagabond? That's a dead manga people sometimes speak about because it was good very....VERY long ago.
Berserk has done as good, and even better, largely better. Its world scale only is so huge Vagabond looks like a 50 pages light novel.
The art style is excellent, and the atmosphere was immersive, but what about originality? Innovation? Research? Development of every single detail or character?

Varies person to person, but mostly dedication. Most of the examples in this thread have been drawing for decades to get to the point where they're putting out what's being posted, but you'll be able to draw stuff of comparable quality within 5 years with dedication.

What makes their art good isn't so much what you're seeing, it's that they're able to draw them in a few hours in order to meet deadlines, and they're able to do that consistently for years on end.

It's even crazier the more you know Chinese. I say this as someone who is not even half baked as Chinese, but more like quick minute dinged in a microwave baked at Chinese. Just that little knowledge alone from like two months of chink class years ago for language studies made me appreciate those pages so much more and I'm sure I missed 90% of it.

The guy may not be able to claim he created something original, but when it comes to adaptations this guy is off the charts. And to top it off unlike most mangaka in this thread, he didn't start out as one or thought about being one. The guy was a graphics designer working in marketing and just got bored one day watching wuxia and xianxia films and said to himself "I can do better than that" and the rest is history. The guy did it literally because he was fed up with mediocrity.

I don't know I thought the scans were mostly decent at the start, it was a 2010 series in China after all I don't even think they had giant scans back then for the early volumes.

Early groups like Fiftay do a good job if you are like me and know enough that you can fill in, but I imagine that the lack of Chinese would make those early volumes grueling. Hell for me it was practically a revision course where I go "Hey, I know that word, ohhh I get it."

The golden age is definitely when HMK picked it up, they were basically Turnip Farmers on Kingdom. Merc still translates to this day, but the hole left by Ki Shodar who did proof reading, redrawing, editing, typesetting, etc etc was pretty big and also that Merc stopped buying the volumes making redrawing for Yudy a lot harder.

Then when you think about how Hox scanlated Sangokushi by himself, you gotta wonder if there's something in common with people who translate chink shit and being hyper competent on the clock.

I do wish it was more like Sangokushi, Kingdom, etc where they actually had pages where they showed the maps though, since navigating Baidu for threads connecting the various maps and events is harder than my day job.

For a while the scans were great, but they were pretty LQ and hard to understand at the start. Now they're terrible, there is no fucking excuse for the comic sans. Shit is fucking cancer to the eyes.
>>
>>143731093
Yeah cause Merc stopped buying volumes, and therefore the scans are at the mercy of chinks at baidu themselves. And the guy replacing Ki Shodar only took it up cause no one else would.

The comic sans is mostly Yudy being hyper clueless and new at everything. That he a 3rd world nammer who barely knows English and only took up photoshop for Ravages is the only person willing to help Merc says a lot about the situation.

But then again I guess I'm more grateful since I'm even more clueless than he is at scanlations. I don't even know all the functions of MSPaint.

that's not really the way to put it, but igarashi's "looseness" is just a little too loose imo. drawing like inoue is a bit harder than drawing like igarashi, as igarashi's style is simpler and easier to maintain.
for example, kiyoshirou style is "loose" as well, but his is also incredibly dynamic and hard to draw. (not to say that igarashi's is easy)

igarashi is more like tsuruta kenji in terms of technical level i guess.
they are still better than a lot of other mangaka (art wise), but not inoue.

it's probably a bit subjective, but eh.

That's not really a line of thinking I think is conducive to art criticism. Thinking on how much effort the artist put in or how difficult the drawing was pushes you into dangerous territory of speculation and assumption.

The Shigurui anime was perfect.
The sparsity made it even better by showing how quick the fights would be in reality. In the manga, the fights took awhile, because of all the keikaku. In the anime, you see the whole thing with any narrations and it's amazing.
>>
>>143740700
well in art it's really hard to tell "who is better?" when both artists are competent and professional. that's why i only judge based on who is more technically skilled.
but yeah you're right. this can be dangerous. when i try to define it my logic becomes kind of wonky.

but then again i don't see any other way around it. every other way is even more subjective.
that being said, comparing great artists to each other is retarded anyway.

The manga is basically
>both fighter look at the other

>reposition themselves
>calculate best move

Anime
>same shit
>but without narration
>all within the span of a second real time
There's no discussion, no monologue, just BAM, and death. The anime feels brutal and realistic as though you were there yourself while the manga is told more as a historical feat where the reader can see what happened.

It's perfect.

What I was trying to convey is that you're more likely to spend time looking at the detail pieces so you're more likely to remember them. I really enjoy YKK for example, but I spent less time looking at the panels so I would probably think of something like Berserk or Vinland Saga first.

/a/ has no fucking clue about art. As in, the actual concept of art itself, they know less than most high school students learn in their first art lesson (because I distinctly remember learning straight off the bat that it's hard to even define art). As a result, they have an insanely limited idea of what makes it good or bad. It has to be detailed, clean and realistic or apparently it's no good, regardless of how effectively it conveys the story.

I've noticed this, too, and not just for art but also for stories/content. Anons really do tend to fixate on the process behind a thing (how hard it is, how much talent it would require, whether the creators got lucky or "earned" it, etc.) rather than just judging on the effect/end product.

People who just discovered Dorohedoro recently likes to think that they've found some rare niched series that only they know.

The next question will be "Why's there never any threads about it?" and the answer will be the usual "There are, they just die out like every other manga thread".
