I wasn't able to go before 2006 but it was really going downhill by then anyway. The real charm of the convention scene was being able to go and see/hear about series you'd never be able to find out about otherwise. Torrenting and fansubs were already getting huge by this point so a lot of the mystery of "what else is out there" was already gone. Really anime conventions from the mid 2000s onward are all about the cosplay and industry licensing announcements. If you're not into cosplay, there isn't really much of a reason to go. Maybe it's worth going if you like to buy fanart, the quality of the artist alleys has certainly gone up, though the self-publishing/printing scene is pretty big now, you can buy a lot of those prints online. I started going to pax east in 2010 and I haven't looked back, my once-a-year convention trip is satisfied.
I think the most depressing thing was going to the Megatokyo panel in 2006 and the giant ballroom was only 1/3 full, and the "questions" to the panelists consisted of butthurt hambeasts complaining about getting trolled on the forums.

Both eupho collector's editions were $150 total, and it got you an autograph session with Chika Ansai. LL jersey was $60, and I checked last night, it was $89 at their store plus shipping. This year they had Shintaro Kago and the last couple years had some gay artists like Gengoro Tagame and Est Em. My biggest regret was not going when Usamaru Furuya and Natsume Ono were there but I was too young and inexperienced to travel from the US to Canada. I'm still waiting for them to get a couple great guests like that again to make it worth going to.
