This is the Black Swordsman. This is the image that's supposed to get fans excited for an anime adaptation of a character arc we have yet to see properly animated.
Well, nope, turns out that's being skipped. We'll instead get to see Guts in his redemption arc instead, with only a single Black Swordsman episode, which was a horrendously paced mishmash of random scraps of Black Swordsman and Lost Children going straight into the beginning of Chains of Conviction.
Not even to mention the usual bullshit of promotional image vs. final product that is the animation and design and sound effects and fucking absolutely everything.

Animation needs work, in particular with mouth and standard walking animations.
Music seems fitting, it's no Hirasawa but it has it's moments.
First episode feels rushed with them introducing Ishidoro, Shrieke, and the Holy Iron Chain Knights in the span of about a minute.
The animation for the action scenes looks good if the clangs are off putting.
All in all it is a very rough start and unless they pull some sort of miracle out of their ass it is completely reasonable to drop it, even if you're a fan.
Side note, making Hirasawa's track a next episode preview seems like a slap in the face of fans of any adaptation of Berserk, be it game or anime.

It was a part of his character development. Guts tried his hardest to pretend that he doesn't give a shit about anything but murderizing the apostles, but Godo gave him a good speech about "Anger being a place where those who can't stand sadness go". That and him realizing that Caska almost being burned at the stake was his fault because he left her behind and went on ahead to wage a war of his own. I think it only makes his character better as you can see him evolve and change over time.

Oh don't get me wrong, I totally agree that's it's an integral part of Guts's character development. I also think that BS Guts was written way before Miura knew what he wanted to do with Guts and the series. That's why I believe that LC Guts is more or less how Miura would write Guts if he could redo the BS arc. Even though Lost Children is part of the Conviction arc, it really is more of a continuation of the Black Swordsman arc with Guts mindlessly hunting Apostles and giving into his inner beast.
All that aside, I'm glad that Guts is in a new stage of his life. It feels like everyone wants Black Swordsman Guts to come back, but I'm happy to see him move forward and progress into a different and more positive person. I like seeing him with a new crew, and I like seeing him fight to protect others instead of just giving in to the beast and going solo.

I almost never drink, but I'm really tempted to down the bottle of wine in my fridge that I bought for cooking. Maybe I'll forget that I watched it or die of alcohol poisoning.
