It was a good opportunity for them to take a break from each other and see if the bond they had developed was something that would last or just a sort of fleeting feeling that wasn't going to go any farther.
Ultimately it was a good thing, if not very sad and bittersweet. That old saying, "Distance makes the heart grow fonder" applies here I think.
